Turntablism: The Evolution of the record player from a device for playing Music into an instrument

Turntablism: the evolution of the record player from a device for playing music into an instrument.

The humble turntable has put music in a spin over the last 50 years, giving rise to a whole new genre of sound, artistic skill and culture.

With creating original music using records, turntables and microphones from the early 1970's onward, Hip-Hop pioneers and visionaries developed many of the turntable manipulation techniques that are still central to Turntablism today.

The best-known examples of Turntablism sit within Hip-Hop mostly as Turntablism is one of the 5 elements of Hip-Hop culture.

The 5 Elements of Hip-Hop:

DJ'ing Abbreviation for disc jockey, A person who mixes recorded music. Considered as an art form (turntablism). Techniques include scratching, flare, chirp, orbit and scribble. MC'ing Short for Master of Ceremonies. Commonly used in the rap scene, MC’s are broken down into the following categories: The Conscious Rapper / The Gangsta Rapper / The Battle Rapper / The Entertainer

Bboy'ing Commonly known as breakdancing, a style of street dance. Graffiti Includes tagging. Dictionary definition: writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place.

Knowledge An element made by Afrika Bambaataa and the Universal Zulu Nation. Provides the context that holds the elements of hip hop together. It also explains the differences between hip hip culture and mainstream culture. Many regard KRS-One as the “true teacher” of Hip-Hop culture.

Sort:

I remember one day in Barcelona's Apolo Club seeing Q-Bert hit play on a Mini Disc player showing what hip hop sounded like, then he hit stop and scratched it with his QFO Turntable. The same he did with almost every kind of electronic music. The climax was when he made D&B only by scratching a single record. The crowd never danced. We were completely astonished and thus paralyzed in bliss.

I suck at scratching lol.

It's a big long history, had arguments with folks almost 20years back now about whether it's a real musical instrument! I maintain it is, all but more like a percussion instrument than strings or flutes ... :)
