What came first, the egg or the bunny? : Origin of Easter Symbols (It wasn’t Ishtar!)

in #culture5 years ago

The first Sunday following the full moon of the month of April marks the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Christ, also known as Easter.

People all over the world gather in their communities, with their families and loved ones, in order to rejoice in the miracle described in the Bible. But what do eggs and bunnies have to do with this?

A common spread misconception is that the celebration began in reverence to Ishtar.

While the goddess Ishtar is certainly a goddess of fertility (something that slipped my mind in the video), her symbols are not an egg or a bunny. Her symbols are knotted reeds, an eight pointed star, the moon, lions and doves. So, where do these other symbols come from?

Ēostre is the early Germanic goddess of fertility whose symbols are that of an egg and that of a hare.

The celebration of this fertility goddess occurred during the time of the year that is now known as April. A brief synopsis of the story goes something like this:

Ostara is the personification of the rising sun. In that capacity she is associated with the spring and is considered a fertility goddess. She is the friend of all children and to amuse them she changed her pet bird into a rabbit. This rabbit brought forth brightly coloured eggs, which the goddess gave to children as gifts. From her name and rites the festival of Easter is derived.

Fascinating the Christians did try and get credit for everything didn't they. This fits more as I have never seen the link with Rabbit and eggs. I often thought the egg part was something to do with spring and new life. Thanks for sharing, I will have to try and remember this one and spread the word; if I can pronounce them 💯🐒

They absolutely did haha You are right in that the egg and rabbit both represent spring and new life, but it was never associated with the resurrection of Christ. These symbols became adopted through pagan influence. Well, even the story of the resurrection was adopted, but that's another topic heh.

Hahah a lot of that book is from other places and blend of other peoples experiences 💯🐒

I should take a leaf out of my daughter's book and ask why and where more things originate from. Thank you for answering where the bunnies and eggs come from as it a question I should have asked, but not realized yet :))

Asking why is my specialty haha, keeps the mind quite occupied! Glad you enjoyed the post, thanks for stopping in!

Easter for me is autumn karma cleaning up the garden spending time with family, and maybe getting a couple of surfing sessions in. I also bow down to the full moon which brings the big tides and the big swells at this time of year. We have this little marsupial called a bilby which is or was endangered so sometimes we get politically correct and buy easter bilbies. Rabbits are a pest here so many people joke the Easter Bunny should be shot. Didn't get a chance to watch your video and so busy this week I'm not sure I will. Sorry darling. I do know a little bit about these Easter origins though. I thought they were might be more things on steemit about this but yours is the first I have seen xx good on you xx
