Gladius - Decrease Load Times, Fight DDoS Attacks. Get Paid for spare Network Bandwidth

in #cryptocurrency7 years ago (edited)

Gladius;

The first and impenetrable line of defence in The Roman Empire: the Legionnaire's sword. Many individual swords brandished in unison created a formidable and intelligent barrier, able to let through allies and repel would be attackers. Backed up with state of the art technology, incisive leadership and advanced thinking, it was efficient and unsurpassable. Rome and it's global empire was secure from the threat of invasion.

Apt & Fitting

Gladius then, is a fitting and apt definition for a BlockChain project symbolising the creative and efficient use of individual computing & network bandwidth (spare) capacity to create intelligent & (local) network pools of communal protection in the perpetual fight against hackers and organised criminals. It has the added benefit of also streamlining traffic and decreasing load times for service subscribers.

Distributed Denial of Service

(DDoS) attacks on are on the rise year by year. They are relatively unsophisticated to orchestrate, so are popular with hackers looking for easy targets. They are increasingly being offered as a paid for service on various dark corners of the internet. There are constantly expanding opportunities for unscrupulous manipulation of internet based businesses by DDoS attack and some of the attacks bring companies to their knees.

One of the largest DDoS attacks in history happened last year in October 2016. The Mirai botnet took down half the internet in America. It affected many big business like Amazon and AirBnb. Taking these businesses offline even for a few hours loses (m/b)illions of dollars and an awful lot of consumer trust. It makes the Evening News . Here's an article about it in The Guardian Newspaper online

Protecting Online Assets

(and reputation) is costly and currently there are a few big players and relatively few options. There is the decentralised server option. Expensive and perhaps not always necessary for smaller enterprises. There are also DDoS filtering technologies which don't always catch the bad traffic. Companies offering protection from DDoS will not necessarily always offer risk appropriate solutions to their clients either. It's big business and fear is great leverage. You, as a business cannot risk the consequences and therefore pay too much for a lot of protection. Some of which may be inadequate. Like many technical aspects of online business, it's poorly understood by clients. Some companies equip themselves with more than adequate protection from real (and imaginary) threats and still get attacked.

Costs of DDoS Attacks

gladius numbers.jpg

High Stakes

If you are a high stakes online business like for example, a crypto exchange with billions of dollars of liquidity passing through your wallets daily, then DDoS attacks are a real and constant threat to your reputation and compromise your ability to provide the required security and assurance your customers expect and demand from a 24/7 operation. Trust, accountability and uninterrupted service are a crucial offering. A well publicised DDoS attack could seriously damage a large enterprise's reputation when it makes the headlines. Equally, a small medium or large online business can be held to ransom or put out of action at will.

The Revolution Has Begun

The BlockChain has a canny ability to come up with endless solutions for old (& newly emerging) problems, solving them smarter, faster and with less cost than before. This is perhaps in part, because the people leading this technical revolution understand the needs of business better than the established tech community and have identified real opportunities to improve the services we all rely on, using advanced, encrypted networking protocols. This is my definition of disruptive. Gridcoin and SONM are two other existing examples of how spare computing power can be used in powerful and effective ways with BlockChain. Gladius takes the concept further with multiple features and a win-win-win model. These projects have so far attracted academic & discerning investors and a growing network of computer users. Gladius will also attract the interest of high speed internet connection owners.

Unique Concept

Gladius is a unique concept and one which couldn't come any sooner, with the mass adoption of internet based business and the burgeoning sector of cryptocurrencies with their own inherent security risks & requirements. Gladius uses spare network bandwidth combined with a marketplace to provide an effective solution to the problem. Investors will win when the market share is redistributed. Users will recoup expensive bandwidth costs.
Companies benefit from best in class technology at affordable prices. Creating a marketplace is a winning formula for obtaining the best price and most efficient use of the networks. It also allows businesses to customise their level of protection based on traffic needs. It's an evolution in process. Traffic speeds can be significantly increased for companies using the service. Overall it's an excellent use case for proving BlockChain's . unrivalled advantages.

gladius benefits.jpg

Gladius will run on Ethereum's, safe, trusted and smart contract enabled network. The token will be ERC20 compliant. It's a well thought out package with longevity and expansion in mind. (I think) it has good potential of a high ROI for investors and as a positive force in the world, it provides a positive contribution, so could well be on institutional investors radars. If it's not yet, It probably should be. A provably fair, decentralised casino it IS NOT.
It could well provide a residual income for academic institutions who have massive spare capacity in their bandwidth provision. Your students may be asleep but a business on the other side of the world is just opening up for the day's business.

Lease my Spare Bandwidth

As the Director of a digital S.M.E, I have lots of costs to consider. A 100mbps internet connection is the lifeblood of my studio. It's a reliable fibre optic service from one of the big telecoms companies and provides an essential element of our business model, at a significant cost. It can be left on 24/7 but for at least 12 hours a day nobody is using it, (or the high powered Xeon workstations it connects).

Gladius Calculator

I had a look at the Gladius bandwidth calculator and it estimates that I could go a long way to reducing my internet bill by leasing out my unused bandwidth to the Gladius Network.I could perhaps even make it pay for itself.

Nice article, @outerground! I was finally getting around to reading all of the contest winners entries, and was shocked to see that your entry didn't place this go around, so I hunted it down to have a read. I'm guessing that maybe it is because this one is written with sentence structure and vocabulary for upper college level education, rather than the typical 8th grade level most often seen.
I missed last week's contest entirely due to the holidays, but I hope to see you in the contest this week!
Cheers!
@mitneb

hey @mitneb.. what can you do ? I thought my Gladius article was not too bad, but with so many entries ! who knows? you can't win them all. perhaps it was a bit high level. I didn't think so, but it did spur me on to write a better article for crypterium last week which took 2nd place. So I can't argue. I think I've placed 11 out of 13 so far. (2x1st, 4x2nd 4x3rd & 1x4th). It's certainly helped my crypto writing stylr. It's so tricky finding the time to squeeze it all in but I'm learning alot in the process and it's also helping me expand my crypto network through other channels. see you on the other side :)

It is a good article, @outerground! You never know what the judging panel is looking for. That's why I have to just write for myself, and hope for the best. Congratulations on your 2nd place win last week. I wasn't able to find the time with Christmas, and all, so I didn't even look at the contest or results. You are a rock star in these contests, so keep on truckin'.
Cheers!
@mitneb

thanks @mitneb. I just try and write for the contests for me as the audience. I think my enthusiasm for blockchain and seeing the enormous potential is my own naive strength. Your writing strength seems to make it less direct, less like a review and perhaps more poignant or interesting as a story in it's own right. You can never tell what they're looking for. practicing writing factual information (with a reason) is really useful and the prizes are a good carrot on the end of the cryptostick ! look forward to seeing what you come up with :)

Thanks for your encouraging words, @outerground. I'm not sure I will make it this week now. I had planned to write my entry today, but my work project took up the whole day, and I will be stretching it to get my daily curation done with the rest of the evening. Maybe tomorrow.
Cheers!
@mitneb

Best of Luck with it and a Happy New Year to you and the mitneb(s). there's always next week. I've found it quite a challenge to write something every week. Hope you come up with something in time ::)

Well, I missed the boat this week, too, @ outerground! I'll have to try for next week. Just not enough time in the day. (We were out having a delicious sushi lunch, I must confess.) A very happy and blessed New Year to you and yours!
Cheers!
@mitneb

well there's always next week, the week after and probably a few more too ! a delicious sushi lunch sounds way more fun (and healthy) than being indoors writing.. I love sashimi. To you TOO> Have a Great Year and let's hope 2018 brings all our wishes nearer :)
