A Look at CoinGecko's Quarterly Reports

Hello Steemians! I started to find our more about @coingecko since they hosted a cryptocurrency writing contest about a month back. Like CoinmarketCap, CoinGecko is a crypto market data aggregation site with plenty of information.

In my opinion, CoinGecko is richer in terms of data as compared to CoinmarketCap. In addition, it is also the only site I know of which publishes a quarterly report on the cryptocurrencies market. Their most recent report summarized what happened in the crypto space for the 3rd quarter of 2018. They have even made an announcement here on Steem!

Insightful Information

The quarterly reports provide some general trends of the cryptocurrencies market and also some other useful information. As far as I know, there are at least 2 prior reports (Q1 2018 and Q2 2018) before the Q3 2018 report which was just released. (Do leave a comment and let me know if you know of any earlier reports)

In those reports, "Market Dynamics", "Major Events" and "ICOs Insights" are the recurring topics. "Market Dynamics" covers the general trends of the crypto market movement in terms of market capitalization and transaction volumes. Within it, price movements and returns are also discussed.

The "Major Events" section lists out important news and events occurred over the past quarter. What I like about this section is that the CoinGecko team consolidated these events into a few broad topics and made bite-sized summary on each of them. Finally, the "ICOs Insights" section talks about the current state of ICOs and how much new projects are raising. The return on ICOs investments is also discussed in this topic.

I think these 3 recurring topics are useful as they represent the past, present and future of the cryptocurrencies market. The "Market Dynamics" section talks about what had happened in the past 3 months. The "Major Events" section covers what is going on in the market right now and finally, the "ICOs Insights" section provide us a peek into the future as these projects in the ICO stage are typically incomplete and represent future products/services we can look forward to in the future.

Special Topics

On top of the recurring topics, there are also a couple of special topics discussed in each report. These special topics are useful for crypto beginners to understand more on technology aspect of the cryptocurrencies space. For instance, in this recent Q3 2018 report, concepts on "Masternodes", "Security Tokens" and "Non-Fungible Tokens" were covered.

These are all topics that are very relevant for folks who just got into this fast-growing crypto space. There are so much more to learn other than looking at the price movement of each coin. Through these topics, we can have a better appreciation of the distributed ledger technology and thus understand that this is not a game of "the greater fool".

I am personally very excited about the idea of "Security Tokens" and "Non-Fungible Tokens". "Security Tokens" are basically tokenized versions of the current asset classes that we know of. Essentially, every type of asset classes can be tokenized. Be it equities, loans and real estates, by tokenizing these assests and through the use of distributed ledger, we can have a more transparent and efficient system in terms of managing ownerships and transfers of these assets.

"Non-Fungible Tokens" (NFT) is also a very interesting concept. For those who have watched or read about the novel turned movie, "Ready Player One", NFT will be a very interesting topic to you. NFTs basically enable the economics in "Ready Player One" by providing the underlying technology creating cryptographically unique items and allowing transfers and ownerships of these items.

The reports from @coingecko are fully backed by data, free and easy to digest. I strongly recommend everyone to take a look at the reports as they provide a wealth of information. For those who really want to learn and know more about the cryptocurrencies space, you should not miss out on these reports.
