Why the Medical Records System Needs Blockchain

“Our vision is to build a new electronic health data platform in which the patient, rather than hospitals, owns his or her own medical records,”

MediBloc co-founders Kho Woo-kyun and Lee Eun-sol for The Korea Herald

Traditional, centralized (government) methods of storing and utilizing patient database systems have seen major issues with their outdated and insecure methods of storing data. Additionally, the patient does not really have full control over their own information. Data ownership and how it is controlled has been a hot topic recent in light of Facebook and other large corporations being exposed on just how much data they control and allow others to control. Since then, Blockchain tech has grown increasingly popular, being a secure and transparent alternative to centralized databases.

The Vision

MediBloc is an open-source healthcare data platform on the blockchain. Medibloc's vision is to allow for a patient-centered healthcare information system. Patients have the ability to manage their healthcare data in a truly secure and decentralized way using the MediBloc (MET) token. The token (on the Ethereum and QTUM networks) lets patients pay their hospital bills and even healthcare services as if paying with cash. MediBloc creates a complete index of medical history for each patient and allows them to share this information with hospitals and doctors, making each visit potentially shorter and more efficient in the process.

The Medibloc platform consists of three layers: Core, Service, and Application

The Impact

When patients start to use MediBloc and gain full control over their medical records, a leading example will be set for how hospitals, healthcare providers and governments should secure and decentralize healthcare services and patient information.

Partnerships

Medibloc actually already has some partnerships in place with large medical institutions including Hanyang University Medical Center, Oracle Aesthetic Clinic, Bestian Foundation, as well as #HASHED, the largest crypto investment group in Korea. The partnerships so far, especially before the launch of the Medibloc Mainnet are impressive and show that there is interest and adoption ready and waiting.

What's Next?

December 2018 is when the MediBloc platform is expected to launch it's full version. From there, more partnerships and interest should occur. Users will be able to fully utilize the MediBloc platform and pay for services using the token.
