Crypto Japan Weekly 3

Coincheck took measures to resume full-scale business

Coincheck, a recently hacked Japanese crypto-exchange, announced that they would stop the trading service of 4 anonymous cryptocurrencies, DASH, XMR(Monero), ZEC(Zcash) and REP(Augur) from June 18th. The rumor was spreading before this announcement, but they actually gave up those cryptocurrencies after the Financial Service Agency strengthened its control over the crypto-industry. The FSA stated that privacy-focused cryptocurrencies would not be accepted in principle for registered exchange. That means if anonymous cryptocurrencies are included in the services you provide, it is difficult to develop your business in Japan.  Many crypto-people in Japan say that it is an over regulation and hinders the development of the crypto-industry. Certainly there is the law and tax arrangement about cryptocurrencies in Japan, where the regulatory environment is more proceeding than any other contries. However, this decision by the FSA is too early, which would keep foreign businesses away from Japan.

Coincheck decided to remove the four cryptocurrencies in order to get registered in the FSA. When this is achieved, they would resume full-scale business. The president of Monex Inc, the company that recently acquired the exchange, talked about a further prospect in an interview with Bloomberg. According to that interview, he plans to broad the crypto-business in America. Would it be possible for Coincheck to acquire a US license as well as bitflyer? We should pay attention to its future trends.

Block withholding attack to MONA blockchain

MONA was attacked by some miners and its blockchain was greatly reorganized last week. Even if they found a block, they continued mining without broadcasting. After the blockchain branched secretly, they broadcasted all the blocks they had mined. This kind of attack is called "Block withholding attack". This caused monetary damage to some foreign exchanges like Livecoin. Almost all exchanges that handle with MONA take measures against this by raising confirmation numbers.

MONA was accidentally attacked this time, but every PoW coin has the same risk. This incident gave us a lesson that dispersing hash power is really important to any blockchain.

LINE Corp. expands thier blockchain business

LINE also established LINE Blockchain Lab in Japan and unblock in Korea,  a blockchain technology subsidiary. Nowadays, they expand their blockchain business. It is said that they applied for registration to the FSA as a crypo-exchange already. The giant SNS company may enter the cryptocurrency industry in the near future.

Fujitsu started a blockchain demonstration experiment

The company has some Japanese big partners such as Softbank, Mitsubishi Estate Company and Tokyo university about this experiment. The purpose of this is to promote new services and business creation among various industries.
