🎬 "Jungle Fever" - Let's get Artsy with Crypto [#cryptoart contest 8]steemCreated with Sketch.

Ever since I signed up with steemit some one and a half years ago, I was fascinated with the possibilities of crypto art. Having my work seen on a blockchain based, decentralized network and also the possibility to create and sell tokenized artworks on platforms like MakersPlace and SuperRare.

For some 30 years, I've been acquiring as much skill and experience as possible in traditional art. My specialty being pencil drawing on glass. On the other hand I started experimenting with digital art in the early 1990s and now it is finally all coming together. Making my crypto art unique, as it is always based on my own traditional art, which I redefine in digital collages, some of them even animated.

For "jungleFever" I chose a very old glass painting, that has quite a story to it on its own.

I ran it through an image glitch tool to create the background for my new picture. The hard part is to always find the one I really like... too many options...

Once I had a version I found suitable, I combined it with the original image. Took the result, superimposed it on itself again with stripes of different opacity and added some more distortions. My goal was to find a sort of psychedelic feel based on a traditional drawing. All of it in the steamy atmosphere of deep djungle...

The final piece was to be an animation, but with very limited movement. I thought about adding some video glitch, but here lately I see it used a lot and therefore I wanted to find a different solution. So, instead of running some tricks in Aftereffects, I "handmade" the glitch. Four tiny red squares popping up periodically and also a line running horizontally like a transmission error. I copied it from the background and put it on its own layer, so I could add the horizontal movement on it directly in Animate, as I did with the red squares.

Finally I added the skull. It is part of a large oil painting I am currently working on. I masked the photo of it and changed the colors to match my new digital artwork, put a bold red line around the edges and added the eyes I had in my library from another piece.

With all the pieces on separate layers, I was ready to take it to Adobe Animate and add the movement.

Exported as an animated gif, it looks like this (large file, patience please)

Finally I tokenized "jungleFever" as a unique tokenized file on SuperRare

There is something cathartic about addressing older art pieces we have done in this way. It has a feel of the matrix about it, in that I mean, our works are out there, enjoyed by a few people but then we take ownership of their existence again and manipulate it for the new audience of the "Plugged in and Always on" of the matrix world we all live in.

If the old You could see today, I wonder what he would think?

I love going through my old scans and photos and reinvent the work from back then. Quite often, a long time has gone by and I see the image with different eyes. Frequently tempted to paint something alike again. And digital gives the option to experiment with it further and try thing that where not possible at the time...

The old me would have been thrilled with the possibilities.... and just imagine, Leonardo would have had a computer!
