Will SmartContainers change the Shipping Industry?

The entire concept behind Smart Containers is one of those rare occasions with the blockchain where there is something that is actually unique. However, it still begs the question as to whether or not they are capable of doing something that can change their entire industry, and do so for the better.

You would have thought that shipping containers and the transportation of goods around the world would be a real art form now with the sheer size and scale of the industry, but it seems that this is not the case. As it turns out, the logistical side of things is in a bit of a mess compared to what it should be like, and this has a huge knock-on effect that sends ripples out across the industry.

That is where the team behind Smart Containers hope to really make a difference

The problem, as they see it, is primarily focused on keeping track of the containers as well as controlling the conditions inside. You need to remember that these containers can end up being sent to all different kinds of climates, so one week it can be in a part of the world where it is winter just to end up being moved to Africa where you feel as if you are on fire. These changes can play havoc with the goods inside, so anything that can improve on that has to be warmly welcomed.

Understanding Their Approach

The company behind this project are planning on focusing on two main areas, food and pharmaceuticals as there is often a substantial amount of wastage within those sectors. We are talking about a huge sum of money, and yet companies have had a tendency to largely ignore what is going on or feel that they are unable to really fix it.

What Smart Containers are hoping to do is to improve things in those areas where here is the most wastage. First, you have the paper trail and boy do logistics companies love their paper. Of course, the problem there is that it is all too easy for things to get lost, mixed up, or anything else that ultimately leads to someone at the end of it all having a huge headache to try to deal with. Then, you also have the temperature and conditions in the container being controlled, which is also going to reduce wastage.

So, this is what they plan

Their approach is to create something called Logi Chain which is their own integrated logistics system on the blockchain. This is an open system that will allow companies to better organize their shipments with this ultimately leading to everything being far more efficient. Greater efficiency means less time and money being wasted, which is always a good thing.

For this to happen, the real product, which means the container or parcel, is replicated as a virtual product for the blockchain. This product is represented by a virtual chip with documents and data being embedded on the chip with it then being made available to anybody that is involved in any stage of the logistical process.

With the documents, not every single one is going to be visible to the public. Instead, those documents that are more sensitive are on a sector of the blockchain which is only available for viewing after permission has been granted. This does add some sense of security in the entire process, which is clearly going to be required.

The aim here is that the documents that are related to the shipment can never be lost as they are represented in this virtual world. All that is required is the permission to be granted and everything can be checked and double-checked, which is always going to be so much better than just hoping that the physical documents get there in the end.

Ultimately, what Smart Containers are looking at doing will be able to offer some kind of resolution to a problem that is plaguing an industry. The very fact that the industry itself already knows that there is an issue should mean that they will be more than happy to pick up the idea and run with it. If so, then any investment in the cryptocurrency at its earliest stages should prove to be a pretty good investment on your part.
