Nano Community Donates Over 300 kg (660 lbs) of Food to Venezuelans

in #crypto6 years ago (edited)

Around 22 days ago, Reddit user 'Windows7733' also known as 'Hector', reached out on the Nano subreddit to ask for help. Hector lives in Venezuela and had just received a small donation in Nano, worth little more than 1 dollar, which is the equivalent of almost one month's salary in Venezuela.

In true philanthropist fashion, other people offered to donate even more, providing Hector with enough money to buy food for 40 families.

Current Situation in Venezuela

Most people are probably already well aware of what's happening in Venezuela, but here's a quick summary. The country is currently experiencing hyperinflation, meaning that their national currency is completely worthless. As a result of that, food prices have also risen, causing Venezuelans to spend their entire fiat savings towards food. [Source]

This reply on Hector's original topic describes the current situation perfectly.

I just want to thank people wanting to help venezuelans, we are really starving here. One dollar is like a month of work, so with the money you will use to buy a cup of coffee in your country, you could help a family to eat for a couple of weeks. Make it nano (which is my preferred coin of course) or bitcoin or any other coin, but please keep the help coming. [By User PsycoSteve]

Nano Community's Response

People on the Nano subreddit responded by donating more than 80 Nano (~170 USD), which was used to buy over 300 kg (660 lbs) of food. Hector provided the community with some verification, to prove that he was honest about everything.

This resulted in the picture you see below, enough food to feed around 40 families in his community. Check out Hector's update thread on Reddit.

Adopt a Family

Hector mentioned in his update thread that he wanted to start an initiative called 'Adopt a Family', as a way to directly help individual people in Venezuela through micro donations. It looks like the Nano community has picked up on this, since there are now several members working on this. [Source]

Nano itself is also running the Venezuela Adoption Project, which is featured on their website. They are looking for 1700 USD in donations in order to grow adoption in Venezuela, they've reached 55% of their goal.

Lessons to be Learned

When we look at the positive effect this sort of charity has, on both the people receiving it and the communities who provide it, it's clear that the cryptocurrency community as a whole can literally make a difference around the world.

Think about how many people could be helped by joining Steemit. If one single dollar can buy an entire month's worth of food, it's crazy for Venezuelans not to grab this opportunity. This is where Steem can truly shine, by allowing people around the world to earn without needing to put any money upfront.

I'm looking forward to hearing from people who live in Venezuela and explain their situation even further. Also interested in hearing about whether most Venezuelans have access to the internet.

It's great that you're aware and spreading this info about Venezuela.

We're getting together a lot of info about our current situation just to share and update the steemit community how is Venezuela right now saying it from inside.

Thank you for your support to Hector and people in our country!

Let me know if you need any support doing that! Like, if you have contacts in your community that would like to receive help, I'd be happy to donate some cryptocurrency.

Message me on Discord if you want to put together some sort of initiative through Steemit ;) Discord Handle: Daan#4869

Oh man that is awesome! Thank you in advance!!!

Honestly, we're not going to ask for anything at first because we don't really have a clear plan for that right now but it's something that is in our minds of course. We already know that we can count on you!

Thanks a lot!

Hey, it's not that difficult, I already have some things in mind. I'd be willing to send 20 or 30 dollars to you, as long as you can fully document what you're going to do with it.

I mean, if you can take pictures of what you've bought with that + the people you've shared it with, that would make for some really awesome posts! Is it easy to exchange Steem for Venezuelan Bolívar?

Yes, the only thing is that they take around 10% fee but it's still easy to do it thru those local exchanges.

We'll chat you on Discord to see what could come up with your and our ideas 😁

That's a great charity initiative, maybe Hector can be persuaded to sign up for a steemit account. :)

Yeah, I think I'm gonna send him a pm about that on Reddit ;)

That is mind-boggling. $1 is a month of work for a Venezuelan? Unbelievable. Steemit can help here. It's great to see Nano helping, too.

Venezuela is going through a catastrophic situation, mediocre salaries, high living costs for all people and crime at its best make living there horrible. It is good to know that there are movements like this to help many Venezuelan families.

A great deed indeed! Sadly most developing countries are also suffering! But we do what we can with what we have! Blessings and upvoted!

See, sir, I understand that people in Venezuela need a lot of money. Wo people are very worried about hunger. How can I help them? Please tell me in detail my English is a little weak

Well, you can check out this thread on the Nano subreddit, they have a donation address there.

But stay tuned for more updates, because I'm looking to start or support a similar initiative here on Steemit.

Ok sir i will wait

This is awesome! Thanks for highlighting this. It is amazing what seems so little to some of us can change things so much for others!

Wonderful to see help for people in need. I hope Venezuela’s economy recovers. Thanks for helping and sharing what’s going on there.
