Mining with your regular PC - Is it possible?

in #crypto7 years ago (edited)

A lot of people do not have the option to invest in expensive, dedicated mining equipment due to a variety of reasons. In this blog post I will be looking at some of the options available for people who want to use their regular PC for mining. Whether this would be profitable, I'll leave up for discussion.

Risks vs Rewards

Using your regular PC for mining has a couple of risks attached to it. If you run mining software for a long period of time, it will decrease the life-span of your hardware. Aside from this, you will also spend more on electricity due to the hardware running at full power. Still, it might be worth it to let your PC mine crypto when it's idle, especially when you have access to cheap or free power. I'm personally running my computers on cheap solar power and I wouldn't mind too much if my hardware suddenly breaks, it's due for an upgrade anyway.

In the past couple of years, I've made an extra couple of hundred dollars by using my PC for mining. I didn't even have the latest graphics cards, I was running Minergate with two GTX 660's, pretty old hardware. They're still working after all these years.

NiceHash

This is a well-known marketplace for hashpower, by running their app you're effectively leasing your PC to other people who use it for mining. It's extremely easy to set up their software and you'll be able to mine in a matter of minutes. All earnings are paid out in Bitcoin. One word of caution though, a while back NiceHash got hacked and a lot of users lost their Bitcoins. So be sure to withdraw your earnings as fast as possible.

Minergate

Minergate allows you to mine many different altcoins and also enables you to withdraw those altcoins. Their mining app is very user-friendly and you'll be able to automatically mine the most profitable coin by choosing 'Smart Mining'. You also have the option to easily add different mining pools.

WinMiner

This one is targeted at newbie users, aside from payments in cryptocurrency they're also offering payouts through Paypal and Gift cards. I do not have any personal experience with this application, but wanted to include it anyway. It does seem like you would probably earn the least with this miner compared to the others mentioned;

Conclusion

Running any of these miner apps might be a good option for you, if you want to make some extra cash on the side. You will not get rich by doing this, but it's certainly not impossible to earn an extra 100 dollars per month, if you have a decent graphics card.

Using NiceHash myself with twin GTX1070's. The yield has gone down quite dramatically over the last few weeks. Not surprising really considering you get paid in BTC and its mining other algorithms which all appear to be doing worse than BitCoin.

Hmmm, do you know what would be a 1060 plus a very powerfull cpu generate a week?

Not a lot these days. If you would have asked me 2 months ago it would have been a different story. A single 1060 is around 2/3rd's as powerful as a 1070 in my estimation. So it would be yielding less than $1 if you used Nicehash.

thanks, that is not much for running the machine all time

You can check it on this profitability calculator:
https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator

Around 5 dollars per week :) Plus some change from your CPU (Without electricity costs)

Yeah, found this around 21 they said.

Nice, I was recently gifted an Antminer S3. It's pretty damn old but so far seems to be doing well mining SHA256 alt-coins.

I actually do my mining through zpool.ca. Once you're in the pool they automatically bounce you through whatever coin is most profitable at the moment in that pool. A big fan of them so far.

Cool Post. Since you got the bitcoin tag do you have a prediction for Bitcoin over the next few days? Also followed you for future posts :)

That's not all the bitcoin tag is for...

Sometimes it does look like that though, seems like the only thing I see are price predictions and TA.

I don't do price predictions, but looking at the market I think it's safe to say that we're going to stay below 10k :P

yeh and u can also just join different Discord Servers @daan and get free shitcoins rained on ya! Might be worth a lot next bull run! ;)

Great collection! Do you know of any PC miners that will collect DOGE?

There isn't an app like these ones for mining DOGE and it would not be worth it if you just use a single GPU. You can set up cudaminer (nvidia) and connect to any mining pool, but you're only going to get anything significant if you have a mining rig.
