The Timeless Test
A strange incident was happened during the England team's tour of South Africa in March 1938-39. At that time, Test cricket was not a scheduled five-day match like now. The game continued till the result was not available.
The last Test match of the series between South Africa and England was rolled out on the 10th day at Durban!
England were batting to chase an impossible target of 696 runs. Even the tourists was made 654 runs in the scoreboard after losing 5 wickets before tea break of 10th day. In the tea break, England needed only 42 runs to win & they had still 5 wickets remaining.

But they were very unlucky!! because they couldn't get the last few runs due to rain. Rain was washed rest of the day, & washed England's hope to win that match also.
Meanwhile, Cape Town to England ship was scheduled to leave just after a day. it was known to everyone. There was also a discussion to held the match till the lunch break of the next day (11th day).
But it was no longer possible due to the chase to catch a train from Durban to Cape Town. After all the English cricketers had to leave the game& run to catch the train!
Some Records Of This Match
▶ Sadly, 10 days even wasn't enough to make the result of a Test match! This is the longest Timeless match in the Test history.
▶ 5463 balls was bowled in this match!
▶ The batsmen of both teams, played 16 innings of fifty or more. Which never happened before that test.
▶ The two teams scored more than 900 runs in that Test, which happened only once in the history of cricket (South Africa - 1011 runs, England 970 runs).
▶ The total runs of the two teams was 1981, which is the highest score in any first-class match ever!
▶ English Legend Wally Hammond made his 21st Century in this match and touched Sir Don Bradman's record.
▶ Earlier the 2nd world war, it was the last Test match of Timeless era.
