Neoxian's Prodigious and Desolate Post-Apocalyptic Writing contest!l | 1005 Years After Earth
Earth has been inhabitable because of extreme ecological conditions. Pollution has made the air unbreathable. Bodies of water were all unsafe for humans, plants and animals alike. Only a small portion of the population of the entire world exists living in an enclosure where air and water were manufactured. Even with the enclosure, life could no longer be sustained. Supply could no longer keep up with the demand. Natural disasters were not helping as well. Just one more major earthquake, and the crack in the thick glass enclosure will give in, letting unbreathable air in that would kill the handful of people remaining.
Lana's team of six people flew off in a rocket ship bringing all the essentials for Earth's start up. They will cruise for 100 years and will orbit back to Earth when conditions are favorable again for existence.
Lana looked at the images captured by the satellite. Her heart sank as she saw the ruins of their habitat. The glass enclosure torn apart, polluted air killed all the people inside. A tsunami of black chemical-water finished it off as if making sure no one survives.
She made her rounds in their ship to ensure all the animals are in hibernation mode. She also ensured all of her team are in their hibernation pods before she steps in on hers. She sets Auto pilot on from her remote tablet and slids in to her hibernation pod to start her 100 year sleep.
Lana was awaken by the anxious voice of her teammate. It took her some time to recover from her sleep before she finally stood up and followed her teammate. She was shocked to see where they were when she stepped out of the ship. Seeing that her teammates have removed their gas masks, she remove hers. She saw tall gigantic trees all around them. Everywhere she looked she saw greeneries. The air was clear. The waters were looking fresh. What she was not prepared to see were gigantic birds flying all around. Their resident zoologist concludes these gigantic birds might also have gigantic land counterparts.He was right. They saw a group of enormous elephants from afar.
They went back in the ship. Lana quickly cheked the autopilot log. They did not go through with their 100 year cruise, they crash landed back to Earth when they were hit by a meteorite halfway along the travel. The hit damaged their ship impacting the pod where they kept the animals and plants. The wreckage scattered thr plants and animals. Earth did not need them to regrow. It just needed a thousand years of non-human existence to take charge of its own restart. As Lana checked their hibernation pods, they were all set to sleep for 1005 years as a result of the meteorite hit. Unsure if it was a blessing or a curse, they gathered. 1005 years after earth is beautiful. But beauty has its price. Especially with the giant predators surrounding them. They, again will need to survive.
