Steem Basic Income Giveaway: Splitting the bill....

in #contest4 years ago (edited)

Apologies for the hiatus in the Giveaway... I was just waiting for some local STEEM disagreements to settle down before handing out he prizes to the last round! Anyway, it appears that things have quietened down to a more reasonable solution...

Thanks to everyone who responded to the last SBI question (Sugaring a Pancake...)... it appears that just like buttering crackers... most people have it completely wrong! Or have deviant tastes...

When we come to live in a different country, we all have varying degrees of culture shock.... one of the more interesting culture shocks that I had when I first arrived here in The Netherlands from Australia was the way that the locals sometimes split the bills...

My Question

  1. How do you split the bills when you go out to dinner with a group of people?

My sample answer

In The Netherlands, something that was quite interesting to me was the concept of splitting bills. In Australia, unless there is a huge discrepancy between diners in a group, we tend to just split the bill evenly.... however, in The Netherlands, it is more common to split the bill according to what you actually ordered, ate and drank!

Now, in many ways, this is probably a more equitable split of the bill... however, at some points it can get to be a bit too much! Once when my wife went to a dinner at someone's place where it was a pot luck (bring a food dish...) sort of meal... after the dinner, an email was sent out by the hosts to ask everyone to tally up how much their meal that they made (or drinks bought...) cost... and then everyone would contribute more or less depending on how much they spent on their meal! It even got into cents....

Of course, that is an extremely extreme example... but it can happen! Not often, thankfully.... Still, if I am with friends from other countries... we tend to just split the bill evenly... however, when I am with work colleagues, we tend to just pay for what we had!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 0 SBD and 1.099 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 2 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

If I go out with a group of good friends, what we do is that everybody is putting some money on the table, and in the end we count everything, we pay the bill and tips, and whatever is left goes in a charity box. If not enough money was collected, we repeat the same exercise.

That sounds like a great way to do things with friends! Where does the charity box go? To a struggling friend or to a real charity?

Real charity... we buy food and Christmas presents for kids from families with bad financial situations.

Haha... it doesn't sound like it is too different from Netherlands then!

With my groups of friends we've always split it based off of what was ordered. That seems to be the norm for restaurants to ask in a college town in the states, at least in my experience. Makes it easier too when we have some people that do and don't drink.

I think that is a great idea... but when things are pretty close, I can't be bothered and would prefer to just split evenly... even if that means I pay a bit more.

It makes sense to split the account. Money quickly began to gain importance. If a person pays the bill, we'il do him a lot of damage.

Ha... yes, but there are many ways to split the bill... evenly, or just by what you personally ordered!

Well it guess it really depends on what all was ordered. If a group of people go out and order the same exact thing, then yes the split should be even Steven. However, if I ordered more than another then it would only be fair that I pay more for my extras. I couldn't imagine having to pay for someone's expensive meal when I went cheap for a reason lol. I hope you have a great day!!

Most of the time when I eat with close friends, it ends up pretty much similar... depending on the friends, we would then just split evenly... sometimes you pay a bit more, sometimes a bit less... it's about the same over time!

Yes many concepts have been created to assist others, small contests are a fun way of getting to know and meet people.

Congrats to the two winners @nutman and @emergehealthier, thanks for the fun events @bengy

Yep... little contests are also a great way to give back to smaller accounts!

I always ask for a calculus on my order then add some more, I think its fair, what if I had kobe beef and you only had a salad. If we all had the same type of food like pizza or fastfood then just split the bill evenly.

Well.. if it is so different, then yes... it is better to split by what you actually ordered... but most of the time, it is pretty close!

@bengy, Pre-plannedaspect should be included when we go for outings and to restaurants because it's about the Distribution of Expenses. But everytime it's not the case sometimes it's about the Treat too.

But when it comes to Distribution Of Expenses people should be clear because many times these things turn out so serious or so funny and embarrassing.

Whenever i went out with my friends we preplanned about the expenses most of the times.

Have a great time ahead and stay blessed.

Yes... I think that is important! Just being clear about how it is going to be done beforehand... avoids misunderstanding!

It all depends on what the occation is .if the treat is on you them you pay the full bill, other than that its a 50 50 split, but if you are going out with a girl friend its never a 50 50 split you pay the whole bill that's how we roll in south africa

Heh... does the girl pay?
