Different Versions Of The Same Story

The Indian security forces claimed to have killed 40 Maoist insurgents, on April 22 and 23, in the Indian state of Maharastra.

The Maoists, however, contested this claim, saying only 25 are known to them – 3 dead bodies were of ordinary civilians while 22 (from the 25 that they could recognize) were party cadre. In other word, 18 of the dead could be ordinary civilians.

According to Lalsu Soma Nogoti, a Zila Parishad member, what happened was a fake encounter. And that as the news of the fake encounter began to spread, 60 commandos came and occupied Boria, a village of 45 houses; the neighbouring Kasansur village has a similar security presence. The security forces, on their part, claimed that they came for the protection of the village folk. But their claim is highly doubtful. No civilian would want to be shot and counted as a Maoist.

As someone who grew up in a conflict-affected region, I'm inclined to suspect this case for a possible fake encounter, because the security forces tend to invent a story to suit some purpose – it's not unusual for them to perpetrate cold blooded massacre. In other cases, in Manipur for example, they have been written about for killing civilians in cold blood and putting the uniform on the dead bodies.
