The Battle Over Bid-Bots and the Steemit Trending Page
Please add your comments. It's an important issue that deserves discussion. Steemit is its content. What's your opinion?
My Bio
I’m just a journeyman character actor who’s had the good fortune to work in film, television and on stage with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, people the likes of Colin Farrell, Regina King, Judd Hirsch, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Al Pacino, Vivica A. Fox, Harvey Keitel, Jackie Chan and Chris Rock to name a few. To see more simply google “Brian Rhodes’.
I developed a bot, the source code is used for 2 different projects @tuanis that welcome new users providing the registration fees for #minnowsupport project, it also upvotes the pos and if the user decides to follow it will pick 10 followers every day and upvote the latests activity that the account made (the goal is to keep people engage). On the other hadn @treeplanter is a fundraising and donation bot that is trying to get funds to keep @kejom-keku project alive with the help of @martin-mikes. So on the topic I believe you can have content creation and support from communities/projects/bots and keep the platform alive and active. I've faced some downvotes but overall the experience is possitive. I'm also part of other projects that promotes original, creative and unique content in a way that actually motivates me to post more frequently and support those projects that are promoting great content as well.
There are initiatives deploying bots to good use currently. However, when bots upvote content they are running counter to one of the prime directives - curation. The bot does not evaluate the content since it’s only objective is to randomly select and upvote. In fact, it may be totally counterproductive. What I deem to be content of interest may not be the bot’s choice. And in fact may even be building a false sense in the blogger of what is good content. The use of bots generally reinforce the concept of the ‘money game’ when in fact it’s all about the content. Focus on it and the rewards will be realized. Simplistic? Maybe! But the road is littered with get rich quick schemes.
I can't agree more with you. Its also sad that sometimes it is hard for good content to be visible. I would really like some people getting more votes but even the greatest intro posts might go undetected by bigger steemians. Thanks for taking time to reply my comment.
What is QA - your focus? I see you’re into photography. I’m following you now. Do you shoot video?
QA is Acronym for Quality Assurance, I'm a computer engineer and I usually code automation tests for systems. I like photography but not even a professional. I like to post about different topics and I started to blog more about personal stuff. Thanks for following :)
I wondered. I help a friend place IT talent throughout Canada. Currently looking for a Senior QA Tester Java/J2EE 12 month contract in Edmonton Alberta! Ha!
I wish I could apply hehehe
If you want to live in Edmonton Alberta and are eligible to work in Canada, email me your resume [email protected] and I'll send you the job description!
Hey @brian-rhodes. Thanks for doing this. Without a view counter, I have no way of knowing if the idea is getting attention or falling flat on it's face, so I appreciate this mention here and everything else you said.
I might do a followup post explaining a little more, focusing mainly on the suggestion/solution portion because I've been brainstorming ever since, attempting to fine tune the idea, and much of that information is now scattered around in the comment section under the post you've linked here, as well as other places around the platform.
I didn't want to use the bots to push the message out simply because I didn't feel like starting another argument on the trending page. I didn't want it to be just another post whining about bots either. So again, I thank you for taking the time to do this.
Please do continue with a follow-up post. There is much yet to be discussed on the bidbots. We seem to be turning to means to artificially embellish rewards which is counter-productive to the Steemit prime directives - Post Curate Vote Earn!
I see there is something behind the seriousness of @brian-rhodes in #steemfilm that is success, I am very amazed and proud of you, but I can only listen to what you write, a great desire to become a movie actor thwarted by the ability that I have. i love hearing the name of jacki chan
