Speculating on Areala, the Warrior Nun

I managed to track this one down online for $10 USD. The title of the comic book is Warrior Nun Areala, and it has recently been picked up for a 10 part, live action series on Netflix.

This one first appeared in 1994 on Antarctic Press comics and was created by writer Ben Dunn. The premise feels like it fits that popular early to mid 1990's motif that features a cold war style stance between the Christian Heaven and Hell. The main character, Sister Shannon Masters, belongs to a secret order of the Catholic Church that exists to fight Satan's forces. As the comic book reads, Masters is dispatched to guard over New York City; the current standstill between God and Lucifer/Satan appears to be ready to implode. A civil war is apparently on the cusp of breaking out in Hell.

The style of this book is American manga; I didn't get into this style in my teenage years, but remember the interest it had with some of my friends.

The first panel below reminded me a lot of Grant Morrison's comment regarding our "Universe being the growing grounds of the manifestation and evolution of a God." I promise, I have more on that coming on my Morrison written Green Lantern preview I'm very excited about.

So with that said, the read was fun. I will probably try to get the rest of the series online if possible; I figure I'd take a waiver on this issue given Netflix's development. If the live action series is a hit, this one should go up in value. If you can find it cheap or relatively low priced at your local comic shop, I'd recommend taking a chance on this one too. Thanks for reading, as always. And please feel free to leave a comment!

Awesome to see someone else giving out the Areala love. I've been collecting this book since it hit shelves back in December of '94, and I'm working with a collaborator on a giant 25th anniversary extravaganza to celebrate it next December. With the Netflix series in the works, I hope this translates to lots of fresh exposure and interest in this title, as it's tons of fun.

I can't believe the numbers these comics are doing right now...last year you'd be lucky to get cover price out of them, and now I see auctions going for $20 and up for the second printing of the first issue.

Might have to think about letting some of my duplicates go...we'll see. :)

I did a write-up for an Areala comic three months back, in case you're interested:

thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Probably not a bad idea to let some duplicates go with the series coming up :) I enjoyed the intro issue; it's a style of comic I am just starting to pick up on.

Can't wait to see your 25th anniversary issue; that is awesome!

This is really a throw back comic. I have seen this one before! Looks really good!

yeah, I hadn't really heard of it until I read about it coming to Netflix. The art is very vibrant, and the story is fun. Looking forward to finishing up the series and watching it online. thanks!
