In Ephraim, Wisconsin
Aslag Anderson, a Norwegian immigrant and his friend Peter Peterson purchased shorefront property and built a large deepwater dock for community use. The community could export goods such as cedar posts, shingles, salted fish, and cordwood. The Anderson Warehouse was built on the edge of the Dock to house these exports in 1858.
The original warehouse was destroyed in a storm, and the second by fire in 1880 and was replaced with the Warehouse that is there today. The Dock and Warehouse were the commercial center of the village until the 1920's. As roads replaced shipping, the Dock and Warehouse began to deteriorate. A 1950 ice shove on Green Bay damaged them and made them dangerous.
In 1951 the Anderson family sold the Dock and Warehouse to the village of Ephraim and they were restored.

A posted sign notes that boaters have "signed" the dockside warehouse walls for years with their boats' names and the year that they docked. "We encourage boaters and visitors to continue the tradition by being creative but tasteful." No carving or spray paint, please.

Great post! I'm originally from Wisconsin but I'd never heard of Ephraim before. Thanks for teaching me something new today!
Door County is a fascinating place with a culture all its own. I love visiting the lighthouses and the cherry orchards.
I was so happy to hear that the dock and warehouse were restored. History should never be removed. : )
