Colorchallenge: Tuesday Orange

Happy Tuesday, Steemians!

It is not in my nature to pick up things that might cause pain. So I did research first to discover that the spines of the Gulf fritillary caterpillar are not lethal weapons. They are for show. However, the caterpillar itself is poisonous.

The Gulf fritillary is an orange butterfly but I’ve never managed to get a good shot of its top side, only its less orange underneath (folded-up wings position). The caterpillar has orange and gray alternating lines with white and black areas.

I think its spines look like pine trees after a forest fire. When the caterpillar does the “J”, it is going to become a chrysalis. It will stay that way for about 11 to 14 days. The chrysalis in the bottom picture has become darker indicating the butterfly will soon emerge.

The Gulf fritillary’s front pair of legs, like some other butterflies, are vestigial and are not used.
