Background 前言

It has been a short while since we had our first five tips for job interviews, I hope you have found those tips useful. Let us now continue and finish the rest.

6. Be a problem solver during an interview

An interviewer may ask what challenges you have had and how you have resolved them? This is to tell what skills you have earned under your belt to jump over the hurdle. Do give a real-life experience. Say, you were a project manager leading a project of different stakeholders. Conflicts among them were so frequent that the project could have delayed but your 'soft management' skills successfully resolved those conflicts. Give some details on how 'soft management' skills were effective.

Some may even ask you to do a mock case study where you need to give a solution to some extreme, unpleasant or ridiculous problems and explain why? For example, a customer is suddenly losing control, going ballistic at storefront and complaining about something that might not be true. The behaviour is blaring and scaring others in the shop. What you should do? This is to assess if an interviewee really has what it takes to do the job well. Some of them may exaggerate experience or qualities in CV.

7. Be positive about your previous employers in a CV although you may not like any of them

The worst CV is one blames any previous employers for whatever reasons one has quitted. For example, I resigned because the company was too small in size and had no more potential.

Perhaps you are not satisfied with a previous employer, but do keep your temper and make it positive in your CV. Who dares to hand a job opportunity to you if you are labelled as an unpleasant and complaining person?

8. Be prepared

Ask a friend or anyone you trust to have some mock interviews with you. These interviews can be full of unpleasant or hostile questions. You can prepare yourself for the worst moment you might have in an interview and you can identify and overcome your interview problems.

9. Be sure to ask at least a question before bringing an interview to an end

A question like: what is the culture in my department like? Or who will be my immediate supervisor? does not hurt.

Without asking a single question at this point can probably show you may not really care about the opportunity. Yes, impression matters!

10. Be thankful 存感激

After an interview, if you would like to give a little positive impression, you may try writing a brief email to the interviewer to express your gratitude for the interview.

Conclusion 總結

Some interviewers like you but some do not. Job interviews merely are matching games where you produce and convey impressions at the end of the day. That being said, to be a winner and get employed, prepare yourself well beforehand.
