Job interviews in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) these days may be daunting and tricky for you; such interviews may have become battlefields testing endurance, patience, emotional intelligence (EQ), and expertise of job seekers.

To help you succeed in job interviews, I am sharing what I have experienced (myself as a business owner and also discussions with fellow business owners and human resource managers) in terms of 10B tips here that may turn you into highflyers.

I am splitting a rather long article (about 900 words) into two short posts for your easy reading. Here, you have the first 5Bs.

1B. Be specific and concise in a CV

Interviewers can be overwhelmed with piles of job applications. They may not have time to read anything wordy. To try not to be eliminated so early, keep your CV within three pages where you should showcase your most valuable experience and expertise.

There can be a tendency that you have many adjectives in a CV describing how competent you are. But, please back your qualities with real facts and actual achievements in measurable terms.

For example, you project yourself as an experienced team leader. You must back this claim with a relevant fact: I am experienced in project managment and led a project team of 30 for a year that eventually yielded a HKD 1 million net profit for the company. If not, your CV is vague and lacks persuasion power.

2B. Be an enabler adding and bringing value to the organisation

It is always a business taboo about saying naively like this “I, as a would-be employee, would like to learn at your company ” to an interviewer. Although you may support lifelong learning, many interviewers are reluctant to hear that you see the company as a learning place. There may be a perception that they pay you to work not to learn. To learn, you go to school and pay your own fees.

To avoid that potential trap, you must make it clear that you will financially invest in after-work learning on your own. Also, you can point it out that your learning will bring good to the company and help them grow.

Even more, pinpointing your strengths as unique value can probably make you an ideal candidate too good to miss. For example, you are multi-talented and have an array of technical expertise to offer. Your perceived value may be higher in the eye of an interviewer as you can give and produce more than others, with the same salary.

3B. Be a high EQ enabler during an interview

More interviewers of the day may want to test how emotionally tough you are or simply downplay your financial worth (they can pay less for what you can offer, quite sad!).

They may ask some rude and unreasonable questions or even intentionally be critical of your experience and skill set.

Keep your temper and respond positively to show that you are able to stay resilient about unpleasant situations. If you really cannot withstand the offensive and rough treatment in an interview, try to finish it as much as you could. Who knows if one day you would be ahead of the person who has given you a hard time?

4B. Be reflective after each interview 反思

Some interviewers like you but some do not. Job interviews merely are matching games where you produce and convey impressions at the end of the day.

Do reflect on interviews you have gone through. Summarise what interviewers have asked most and focus on these questions. Also, think of and jot down what you could have done better in previous interviews.

5B. Be knowledgeable about strengths and weaknesses of the organisation you are applying for 了解公司的長處和短處

Do some research into the organisation you are applying for and find opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses of the organisation and also main competitions.

You may be asked some questions around those aspects of the organisation in an interview.

Conclusion 結論

Some interviewers like you but some do not. Job interviews merely are matching games where you produce and convey impressions at the end of the day. That being said, to be a winner and get employed, prepare yourself well beforehand.

I hope you enjoyed my first 5Bs and please stay tuned for the rest 5Bs in an upcoming post to be uploaded soon.

Agreed. It takes both hands to clap. The interview is like matchmaking.
However, the first impression does make an impact.

We cannot direct what interviewers think and act, but we can get ourselves well prepared and be reflective, to try to get ourselves through.
