My 1982 Ford Capri MK3 Restoration (Modified)

in #classiccars8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians,

Apologies for the lack of posting of late folks, I decided to take a month or so off from steem and just got caught up in other things over the last few weeks but today I wanted to share something a bit different to my usual output, something that has also been a huge hobby or passion of mine since I was a wee small sprog, and that is classic cars and more specifically the Ford Capri, I love 'em and grew up as a member of the club and going to shows largely due to my old mans 40 year passion for them, so I inevitably inherited the bug.

I've owned 3 so far, currently I do not own one and I miss not having one, but someday I will have another. In the meantime I wanted to share some photographs of a project I undertook some years ago, with the help of my friend who is a quality Capri specialist. I was quite young here, early or mid twenties.

So here goes, this one was my pride and joy and yes I do very much regret selling it :( I hope you enjoy the final result, I originally paid just shy of £250 for what seemed like an old banger but to me, apart from the front drivers side wing and drivers door being rotten, the shell was very solid indeed.

Oops!! (it wasn't me, although the day I bought it, it barely got me home)

So I forgot to take pics of before I stripped most of it, but I literally gutted the car apart from running gear etc and did all of the prep work, getting the original model striping kit, which was huge, off the sides was a nightmare.

Filling holes, sanding, stripping inside and more sanding down of the shell..

The boot was in amazing condition, no rot anywhere.

The car will be spayed black at my friends workshop, so I spray the engine bay and boot ready for the outer shell professional respray later on.

I stripped out the grotty old interior, door cards etc. Sourced a retro black interior from a 2.0s capri.

Now it is ready to go to the workshop for the hard work, new parts, panels, welding, respray and fitting new interior, wheels, lights, trim, grille etc

Trying to get it as smooth as possible for respray.

Off with the rotten wing and A-post

Lovely new wing on

Respray done.

Now putting new wheels, trims, lights, bumpers on, all replacement parts. Also earlier on, had new exhaust, brakes, various engine parts replaced.

Slightly earlier pic

And there she is, complete with MK2 grille which I think looks great.

First wash, and added the furry dice haha! (never leave home without them)

Below, I entered my Capri in for a competition at a show and won a shield for best modified MK3 in show.

Thanks for checking out my post! :)

With love,
John.

f**k dude! incredible job. A classic . Nice end.

I'm married to a motorhead and he misses his cars but we are hoping to get back into restoring a classic car in the near future. Thanks for sharing your pics. The capri is a beauty. Great job on it.

Thank you for checking out my post. Yeah, you should get back into them, they are great investments i think. I hope to acquire another capri at some point. Cheers :)

I come from a family of body/paint, and mechanics. My moms father and her brothers ran a body shop, supported 3 families! My ex husband is a gifted machanic and I think the talent is genetic, my son has the same gift...I can smell the burnt oil and paint looking at your awesome photos, great job! So glad you came back🏎

That's cool! though I'm no mechanic, I just know my way round a capri because I grew up with them and, like you, had mechanics around me so I know a little but only ever worked on capri's in this way. My mechanic is my trusted friend who is a specialist, I did the stripping, sanding, sourcing parts, replaced some engine parts and sprayed the engine bay, boot etc, fitted some replacement parts but the real work such as welding and fitting parts like the a-post, wing, respray, exhaust etc are all the work of my friend, so I had help. I haven't got a mechanical mind, but I do love the beginning and end parts haha and the overall creative elements to it. I've had other cars but have zero interest in them really lol. Thanks reddust, happy to see you still creating and I will try to post more often. Cheers! :)

We must be twins, I swear it! I'm so happy you're back from your hiatus.

Haha, happy to be back, and loving your art as always. I need to get doing some more island posts. I got busy trying to put some roots down on the island, earning money, but I plan to go walking around Europe in spring/early summer so I reckon i'll be posting consistently then. Good to see you! :D

My brother and brother-in-law love paint and body work. My hubby is a total motor head. I have some great youth memories of tinkering with the cars and crawling under them with my dad whenever he was working on them. Maybe that's where I got my love of cars and tools? lol

Which engine did that car have, and did you modify that at all beyond a stock rebuild?

It was only a standard 1600cc OHC that was originally in the car, the original model was a 1.6 Cabaret. It had a 4 speed gearbox. I wanted to put a 2.0 pinto in it but I ended up selling it on a couple years later for a 2.8 injection capri, though the black car was solid as a rock. It is modified but I never wanted to over modify it with bodykits, silly wheels etc so as to keep that original, retro look. Cheers.

When you can make a Capri look good, you got talent.... nice look to it. Any other color than black and it would have been just a Capri.

Thank you, this one was my pride and joy for sure, I regret selling, I opted for a powerful capri but bought one that was no where near as solid and had much more rot. Yeah you got it, the black was my only choice for this one, also sourced some great black very old recaro seats from another model that I put in. Thanks!

Very good post, excellent work dear friend @ jonjon1 congratulations

Thanks jlufer, glad you enjoyed this post, i hope to be doing some more magical island posts soon. Cheers my friend!

Hi @jonjon1
Nice post. I am from South Africa and we only had the MK1 here by us. We however had a unique Basil Green Ford Capri Perana V8 which was sanctioned by Ford, click on the blue text if you would like to see more on these cars. They are very collectable here by us. If you would like to see some car posts you can also look at my page.

Capri Perana's are the boss!

Thanks rynow. Oh yes I've the seen pics of the Basil Green one and it's incredible, in fact I have always loved the perana, it's uniquely South African. Didn't Basil Green also do a Granada Perana as well as the Cortina and Capri? also, the Perana v6 is the even rarer one isn't it? beautiful car, always wanted one and I bet they are so very valuable now. Thanks for sharing that, i watched the Basil Green film on youtube some years ago, very interesting. My dad once had the MK1 RS3100 and they are incredibly rare now too, they were a bored out 3.0 essex to 3.1. http://rscapris.co.uk/RS3100Info.html I will check out your page and follow, cheers! :)

Yes the original Perana's are very rare these days and are quite expensive. (Actually all the Capri models are hard to find these days.)

Great work, thanks for sharing. I remember working on pld cars with my dad many years ago, they were usually Alfas 😀

Thanks, yeah alfas are a cool car man.

Awesome car friend. A lot of hard work for sure. 👍

Thanks mate, appreciate you stopping by! :)

Cool project, Please next time do not use the tag #STEEM, as this has nothing do do with the Steem blockchain.
