Biber, Crucifixion Sonata (LIVE)
This sonata is one that I recorded live quite some time ago. It's nice to dredge up old recordings and still be generally happy with them, yet hoping that I have grown as a musician and violinist over the intervening years....
Biber's Rosary (Mystery) Sonatas are 15 (plus one extra) sonatas that are based upon the 15 stages of the Christian Rosary. They are divided into three sets of the 5 Joyful, 5 Sorrowful and 5 Glorious Mysteries. This particular sonata is the Crucifixion, the 10th sonata and thus belonging to the set of the Sorrowful Mysteries.
It can be a bit of a test of endurance to play, but it has earned a place in my repertoire as a relatively impressive piece that can be brought out at short notice for a recital. This live and unedited recording was done in Australia, when I still lived there.
The entire set is unusual in that it makes use of the Baroque technique of scordatura. Normally, the violin is tuned in 5ths. However, for this set of sonatas, we have a completely different tuning for each sonata. Biber sets the tuning down at the beginning of each sonata, and then writes a tablature that notates fingering instead of pitch.
Hope you enjoy the recording, there is a little Easter egg in it for those of you with keen ears. The pitfalls of live recording....

A nice sounding piece, you do play very beautifully. As for the easter egg I haven't heard it yet, but I am only at the 5 minute mark as I type this, and I have to move on to the next post, as I have a lot of voting to do. But can still listen for it as I have it opened in another window, and I am kind of delaying hitting the post key, so I can listen a little longer for the easter egg, if the egg is a bad note or something of that nature, then I am sure I will not hear it, Oh heck, may as well delay on the post key, since I am now 7 minutes plus into the tune and so that is less than 2 minutes before it is over. I feel like a little kid at his first easter egg hunt, I just have to finish listening. Damn it's over, must need a musical ear to hear the easter egg, which I don't really have, I just like listening to music.

Ha ha, @bashadow, it wasn't a musical slip or anything. Just a passing ambulance near the end! Very faint, but somewhat amusing given the topic of the piece!
