Unlocking the Power of Chrome: Hidden Menus

in #chrome6 years ago (edited)

Welcome back to Unlocking the Power of Chrome. For this first issue of the week instead of covering an extension, I am going to talk about some of the hidden menus that Chrome has.

These menus are not always easy to find, but I am going to direct you to a site that will allow you to easily access them whenever you want.

Please be aware, some of these URL's are pretty in-depth and messing around with something you don't understand might require you to uninstall Chrome and reinstall it if you mess something up.

Are you ready to dig in to the Chrome hidden menus?

The key to accessing the menus is pretty simple. It requires you to be able to type a url into your Chrome address bar.

All Chrome menus start with chrome:// so instead of typing the usual http:// in your address bar you type chrome://

After you type that the possibilities are abundant. Here is a sort of table of contents you can access to see all of the available menu options:

chrome://chrome-urls/

Remember you can't have the http:// in front of the word chrome. If you do, the address will not work. It is just chrome://

Here are a couple key menus that you might find interesting:

chrome://omnibox - This gives you access to the settings for the Chrome omnibox search field.

chrome://flags - This menu has experimental features that are not officially supported. Use with caution!

chrome://extensions - This shows all extensions you are running in Chrome and allows you to disable individual ones or remove them.

chrome://accessibility - This menu allows you to edit accessibility options for the browser as a whole or for specific pages.

chrome://settings/cleanup - This can help you find harmful software on your computer and clean it up.

Sometime when you have a little time and you are feeling adventurous take a dive into some of the hidden menus that Chrome has to offer.

Hehe have been checking out what you can do with chrome://flags. Seems to be very very experimental, I think I did break something.

Oh wow! Yikes. You might be able to do a reset or just a re-install. It is interesting all of the goodies they have hidden around.

Another great installment!!! These are so informative. There is so much that people can do with Google that they are not even aware of.

For sure! Thank you so much!

Once I get home I am going to try this hidden menu you made known

Awesome! Be careful and good luck!

I have found some of these, but nowhere near all. And yes, I've had to reset a couple of times :)

Thanks for a great post! I really appreciate it.

No problem! Thanks for the comment!

chrome://settings/cleanup

Just a small correction.

But, yes, all of this can be really helpful.
I will try that one to see what will happen.
I bet app will tell me my PC is a virus hahahaha.

Thanks I have taken care of the extra 't' :) It's hard telling what it would find on mine!

Great post man! Never realised those hidden features!

Thank you!

Cool! Didn't know sites with chrome:// even existed...

Yeah, I have to use them quite frequently when I am checking to see if the policies I pushed from my management console are coming through on my Chromebooks.
