Topic: When the Judges Ruled

In the days when the judges ruled in Israel, a severe famine came upon the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah left his home and went to live in the country of Moab, taking his wife and two sons with him.
The man’s name was Elimelech, and his wife was Naomi. Their two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in the land of Judah. And when they reached Moab, they settled there.
Word for Today: In the days when the judges ruled in Israel, a severe famine came upon the land. – v. 1a.
Inspiring Commentary:
The days when the Judges ruled were dark days for Israel. Though the statement was a reference to a timeline in history, it was however accompanied by massive disobedience and not without consequences. Those were days when everyone did what seemed right in his sight, but not in the sight of the Lord. God was dethroned and self was enthroned.
The national socioeconomic and political crisis of that period was not a surprise. The land was under the leadership of Judges but not of God, and famine broke out as a divine chastisement. The emergence of those Judges was an act of God's intervention in order to restore His people to Himself, yet the people persisted in their unbelief and disobedience.
Dethronement of God and enthronement of self in our personal or communal life is an invitation to anarchy. The scriptures say, “Let Christ reign supreme in your hearts.” He alone is Lord and King. Let's critically examine our current national socioeconomic state, could it be that our nation has abandoned its maker and ruler? We need to return to God. What’s going on in your personal life? Is God speaking to you through some happenings in your life? You need to come back home.
Prayer: Father, I need You as Lord over my life and my affairs, please call me back whenever I stray from You. Please heal our Nation Nigeria for we have strayed from You.
