A Lesson in Freelancing and Faith
In 2010/ 2011, my first years of illustrating for publishers, I was given a brief for a book of children's bible stories. It is always exciting to get a contract for a large number of illustrations because that gives me financial stability for months.
I submitted a few examples. The pictures didn't have to be historically accurate but colourful and engaging. I had good feedback but ultimately didn't get the job. As a freelancer, I put a lot of effort into winning clients and more often than not, it does not pay off but I persevere. Doing what you love is worth it.
This bible story was about Jesus raising Jarius' daughter back to life (Mark 5: 35 - 43). I hold onto every image because they all have a place in the development of my portfolio. God is faithful and I have provision; even though I sometimes fail, new opportunities come.
