A Chicken Roadtrip and Drama in the Flock!

in #chickens7 years ago (edited)

What do you do when your friend has Olive Egger chicks and a beautiful Silver Laced Wynadott girl for sale? You get in the truck right away and go get them babies!! I don't really need more chickens....but this chicken math has got me beat, what could I do?

Daisy is looking divine after her mid-winter molt.....#stunningandsheknowsit

We hit the road this morning, we had to travel 1.5 hours to pick them up. I love roadtrips!!
20180212_123508.jpg

We drive through the Canadian shield all over here so I tried to get pictures of the incredible rock walls blasted out to make our roads.

Some of the walls are 30+ feet in height. In these you can see 2 different types of rock....

We are here. Ponies in the front yard! I need this in my life. #homesteadgoals

My new Silver Laced Wyandotte!! Everyone picks their chickens up in a cat carrier, right? I accidentally got a cream coloured Orpington girl too.😏

Babies in a shoebox. There are boot warmers in the bottom of the box for warmth until we get home to the heat lamp.

Oh my word I love chicks!!
20180212_121353.jpg

Now back to settle everyone in. Quick stop at the farm store to get chick feed.....why do I always buy more seeds??!?

That is a lot of snowmobile tracks!

And home. After settling the chicks I will take the ladies out back to meet the rest of the flock. I am not worried about quarantine, I got some of my other ladies from the same friend and know her well. My rescue ladies have been with me for over a year and my whole flock has had fowl pox already so they are immune now. It is recommended you keep new birds separate for 30 days to watch for illness and parasites.

Here is your new digs 'lil babies!! Heat lamp, medicated chick feed and fresh water is all you need to start

Now, here is when things got crazy. There were fights right away. My #chickenbitches were NOT welcoming AT ALL. I attempted pics of the battles but they were blurry. It ended with each new girl hiding in the run.

Sylvia (the new girl, grey one in the middle) right after Diane attacked her. See Daisy hiding behind the ladder? Haha she's a lover not a fighter!

Mr. Hendrix in the middle trying to gain control

Now my son in the middle trying to gain control....

The outcome: Chaundra is in hiding.....my daughter named them
20180212_142153.jpg

And Sylvia?
20180212_142004.jpg

Hid inside, not behind the bin. Poor girls:(
20180212_142250.jpg

Threw some of my herb mix in the run and coop to try and aromatherapy everyone to calm down.....and carried on with my day.
20180212_142324.jpg

Cut to chicken bedtime.
20180212_175426.jpg

They were already tucked in. Looks like the fighting has stopped, that's good...but when I did a head count something was wrong.

5 fluffy butts

*2 here....new girls banished to the floor (beacuse my girls are rude!!)
20180212_180453.jpg

Huh. I have 13 chickens. It's dark out...what is going on??!? Quick look around my son noticed these:
20180212_181153.jpg

Are you kidding me? Right out in the open in the dark??
20180212_181319.jpg

Looks like there was a rebellion. They seem extremely happy to see us. Probably freezing, they obviously didn't think this through haha!! We had to carry them back to the coop.
20180212_181303.jpg

We shall see how tomorrow goes in #chickendynasty. Will the flock accept the new blood? Will my chicks get cuter?? Stay tuned....😉

I missed this when you posted it! What a great story; I was thoroughly entertained the whole time reading it. I'll have to pop over to your blog now to see what happened next :)

Good to see your new chicken was a Lover not a fighter. Lol

No one likes a ragey chicken haha!!

I love hearing your chicken stories! I actually empathize because my cats are not friends. I'm like, y'all, I have done ALL THE THINGS and you have lived together for years, cut me a break! LOL. I'm glad the rebellious ones were okay. Silly chickens.

Haha!! I guess the cats have a love/hate relationship at this point? The flock seems to be doing better....I felt really bad for not handling the introduction better. I have a plan for next time:)

takes a deep breath

Sqweeeeee!!!! I LOVE chickens and chickies and the fluffy butts and everything about them! I wanna snuggle your babies!!!

Hahaha yes!!! They are so snuggly!! Just cheeping and sleeping <3
Aren't fluffy butts the best??!?

Oh man, I am way too nervous to do the dump and hope everything goes well for introductions. Hahaha. I do the metal kennel in the coop for a while. Or I have a grow out pen I could use too. But I am also way too nervous now to do any sort of grown chickens. My chickens have got me stressed out over all the sicknesses! I am glad no real fights were to be had! I bet they'll be just fine because they slept together tonight. Haha. What a fun road trip! I have a SLW too! She's alright. Hahaha.

They accepted my 3 resuces pretty easily so I am hoping the same for these girls. I will be checking on them early for sure! If I get more I might use a pen to make it easier on them. I understand the stress over illness, I am always on guard for symptoms. So far the SLW seems sweet <3

That's great! I believe mine are naturally jerks. Hahaha. No trust! Hahah.

So far so good this morning. There seems to be only 2 still being jerks hahaha!! It is supposed to be above zero tomorrow and the next day, I am hoping a forest trip will bond everyone:)

Oh good! Yay. Oh man, above zero. I am so glad we haven't got any negative temps yet this winter! (which is odd). I hope everyone starts getting along!

cute photos!!!

Those are beautiful! We have a few silver laced ladies. We only got them because they're pretty 🙃

Same reason I got her haha!! Sooo pretty!!
