The Steemit Christmas Book Challenge - recommend a favorite to the Steem community!

in #challenge6 years ago

I keep seeing this image everywhere I look, be it on Facebook or Instagram or even when looking up writing stuff. For some reason, it keeps popping up everywhere and I get why. I'm in quite a lot of book groups, mainly for my own book, and it's really the sort of thing that appeals to bookworms a great deal. I can not remember a single Christmas when I didn't want a book. It's the best gift you can get, in my opinion. I love books, if you hadn't realized already and I really like the idea behind this image. Now, I'm not sure if it's true, not knowing anyone from Iceland (if anyone knows, please tell me!).

Apparently, people in Iceland buy a lot of books. Crazy, I know. Also, did you know that Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country? I had no idea before seeing this. Anyhow, it's an interesting fact, particularly if it's true.

Now, the reason I am writing this here is there are a lot (and I mean a LOT) of intelligent people here on Steemit and a lot of them are well-read. It's simple really.

Recommend a book to the Steemit community.

Don't try to sell it and try to avoid the classical description. For example, don't tell us to read Romeo&Juliet because it's a tale of star-crossed lovers whose families are at war bla bla bla. Tell us why you think we should read it.

See, the truth about books is that it doesn't really matter what the author meant by it or what the critiques think of it. It only matters what you, the reader, think of it. Why you love it. You don't love a story because the writer meant it as a metaphor for his dog feeling poorly. You love it because it says something to you, it connects with something deeper in your soul.
Well, share it.

Tell us why you love your favorite book.

Let that be your gift to the Steemit community this Christmas.

A book can change lives.

A book can save lives.

Words are immensely powerful, so who knows what may happen? Someone might be so touched by your recommendation that they quit their jobs and move away, start a new life altogether. It could be an eye-opener. It could make them fall in love with life all over again. It could change everything.

I'm sure you know such a book, that you have one book that completely changed the way you view things. Or maybe just a book you really really like.

Write about it.

It doesn't even have to be a long post, just write what you feel, what you think might convince others to read it as well.
It's free, it doesn't take long and it's an excellent gift.

I'm tagging a few people I'd love to hear recommendations from, but by no means all. Feel free to join, even if nobody tags you. The more the merrier!
Also, feel free to tag others! :)

Ooh Hon, that's a hard one. I was born over a bookshop and have been reading non-stop ever since I was about 4. I'll do my best.

Ha! I'm sure you'll come up with something great :) Besides, no one says it has to be just one book ;)

My favorite book is The Neverending Story. When I was a kid, it was escapism. The kid in the book, well, no spoilers. But as an adult, it's that and so much more. Juicy ideas to flop around in your head. It's a lot of "our creativity can save us or curse us" and I leave it wanting to think more deeply about everything I experience.

Also, I just finished reading Maniac McGee to kids. And they cried with me for just a hero of a kid that we identify with and should emulate. It's true about people, how they all love and want love. Oh gosh, I'm tearing up again thinking about the bad kids and their love for Maniac. We all crave stability, and it's a cruel society that keeps it from us.

The book is not revolutionary, but it inspires me to take revolutionary stances.

I have not read either, though The Neverending Story has been on my to-read list for quite some time! :) These are some excellent recommendations right there.
Inspiration can come from the strangest of places and I love that you told me what you feel about the stories - it's exactly the sort of thing I wanted. Thank you so much @improv for participating <3
I will get to these books as soon as I can! Really appreciate it!

These are some of my favorite books, none of these is a happy ending story and I think that this says a lot. The book that with no doubt changed my life is Wuthering Heights, a totally unconventional love story, in which are spread torment, pain and passion. I found similar features in Madame Bovary and Bel-ami, their main characters are enveloped by the whirlwind of their emotions, which guides their actions and decisions. I find difficult to explain why I like similar books, for many people they are boring, but I find myself in these stories, they’re like a mirror where I can reflect, and these characters are my fellows.

I don't think these are boring books at all :) excellent choices, I would say. Thank you for the recommendations!!
