Tonkinese Cats

Asian cats have gained popularity of over the years and many breeds have come about during the earlier years of discovery. Many have sought the exotic features of these cats to create unique breeds that have gone to be recognised on a global scale with much success and value. The Tonkinese is another cross between Asian cats but is highly regarded as one of the more exotic mixes of the group. It is the cross between Burmese and Siamese cats, two cats regarded as prestigious in their own right, creating a compound of interesting genetic characteristics. Although both the Burmese and Siamese cats are found in the same region which lead to spontaneous Tonkinese litters, repeated success had not been observed before. During the early 50s, constructed breeding programmes were attempted in an effort to realise the Tonkinese breed.

Though the initial breeding attempt was short lived, many other breeders took interest in this effort and would continue this cross for a few years to come. The objective was to achieve a Tonkinese with a darker coat with pointing between the two parent cats. After a decade, the Tonkinese was finally recognised as a breed by various associations and many others would follow suit for the years to come. The Tonkinese cat is a distinct cross between the Siamese and Burmese with characteristics being pulled from both gene pools. Qualification as a Tonkinese will exhibit characteristics from both, maintaining a balance between the two appearances. These cats, despite seeming slender from its legs, have quite a muscular frame. Slender stature with an underlying muscular frame is evidence of its heritage and its weight is also heavier than expected. Tonkinese cats can be expected to reach a gross wright of up to almost twelve pounds.

The fur coat of the Tonkinese is short and densely packed towards its skin. Its texture is uniformly soft and will shine when kept in prestige condition. Though the Tonkinese can be regarded as a shorthair cat, a regular grooming schedule should be maintained to ensure a pristine condition of its coat and hygiene. They will appreciate this and are known for their friendly and approachable personalities. Owners will enjoy the interactivity that can be experienced with this cat as they approach most situations with great curiosity. The Asian cross breed is a fine choice for new cat owners and will offer close companionship for many years to come.
