Ocicat Appearance

Ocicats are exotic in appearance and one would be forgiven for mistaking it as a wild cat. It features spotted patterning and a muscular frame. This breed would come into existence through chance as a certain breeder from the United States in Michigan conducting experiments would realise a unique looking litter. It is the result of breeding a cross between the Abyssinian and Siamese cats and was first realised in the mid-60s. Its name, Ocicat is a derivative of the wild ocelot cat as they are very similar in appearance. However, despite their similarities, the Ocicat is a domestic breed with no link to wild behaviour.

As the breeding world has taken notice of the Ocicat, it has taken almost 30 years for the cat to realise recognition on a global scale. Despite being recognised as a breed within the United States after its initial conception in the 60s, it wasn’t until the late 80s where it would receive championship status. Over time, the key characteristics of this cat have been explored and some of the more desirable traits have been identified. It’s often a difficult process in identifying the true appearance of an Ocicat kitten due to their immature patterning that will eventually shift as they mature. There are a number of desirable features that breeders look out for, for instance the ‘M’ marking on the cat’s forehead. Much of the prestige in patterning comes in well pronounced forms and the dark contrasting colour of its spots. Dilution in patterning is considered undesirable and is common within lighter coat colours such as lilac.

Ocicats come in various colours ranging from darker to lighter shades. Prospective owners will be able to choose from a range of chocolates, cinnamons, silver and more. The coat of these cats are known to be thicker and short in length. When kept in pristine condition, the coat will emit a sheen that is testament to the cat’s wellbeing. Typically, a healthy specimen in the Ocicat variety will be musculuar in stature. Its eyes may be any colour and is almond shaped although a blue iris has never been feature in an Ocicat. New owners will enjoy interacting with this cat as they display highly intelligent and alert personalities. As time is spent, a bond of affection and loyalty can be expected and much of the activities between pet and owner will be met with energy.
