Long-haired Cats

Grooming cats is no simple task. This is a personally tailored treatment that needs to be planned out and actioned on a regular basis. Long-haired cat species are in need of special attention in comparison to short hair strains. This might be something to consider if purchasing a new cat for the household but with a little preparation, maintenance should not be any more effort to any other type.

Long haired strains are very majestic cats. This include the Maine Coon, Persian and other Forest related cats. This family of cats are susceptible to build up of dirt around the ears and deeply lodged dirt particles trapped in their thick fur. Without maintenance this can build up and their coats begin to knots. Cats dislike this and it can even lead to the skin feeling a little pinched at times. Sadly without much attention, this could very well be the fate for a cat who is not well groomed. In short, groom well and avoid hair mats to keep ones feline friend happy and beautiful. Not to mention healthy by avoiding infections.

In comparison to shorthair grooming, there might be a little more involved to get desired results. The correct tools are of importance when dealing with this type of cat. Wide toothed combs are the preferred choice for grooming sessions and should be gently used to untangle hair mats and remove any lodged dirt in the coat. It is essential that the comb not irritate the cat’s skin under any degree of force and the comb itself should be checked for any sharp points that might exist.

There may come a time where deep and hard to remove knots appear. This is common among these long haired strains. A simple application of talcum powder will allow these to come undone with the assistance of one’s hands. The powder will also serve as a binding agent to remove any greasy dirt that may have built up over time. As the knots are removed, a cat will appreciate what is being done for them and come to enjoy these sessions. This may be hard to initially start but persistence and patience will eventually pay off.

As with any grooming sessions, ensure that sensitive areas are avoided to prevent any discomfort and injury. A suitable area and time should be planned to provide the best environment for the grooming session. A quiet time in the day is best, perhaps after a snack in the middle of the day.
