Devon Rex Cat History
While the Cornish Rex was first birthed in the early 50s and recognised as an official breed almost 20 years later, there are many other Rex variations that the breeding industry has had the pleasure of exploring. The Devon Rex is another cat that possesses unique traits that has seen great attention and admiration over the years. This type of Rex is often referred to as the ‘Pixie’ like cat as its appearance is similar to the depicted mythical creature. Their personalities align with this also as they are known as the pioneers of mischief. This is attributed to their highly intelligent minds and boundless energy reserves that sees them stay active throughout the day.
In similar fashion to the Cornish Rex, the discovery of the Devon Rex was a spontaneous event of breeding. The cross between a curly coat and tom from the neighbourhood in Devon of England would see the first Devon Rex born. Appearing around the early 60s, the resulting kitten was a dark brown/black shade with a curly coat. Observing a curly coat on this kitten was the first inclination that the Rex gene may be present in this kitten. However, after further investigation and observation there were distinct difference between the traditional Cornish Rex and the Kitten. The curls were formed in a different manner and assumed a distributed disorganised structure. There were many varying factors that deviated from the appearance of the Cornish Rex including the position and size of ears. This gene would be carried forward in a breeding scheme that was designed to develop the lineage of the eventual Devon Rex that would come to fruition. After around twenty years, the Devon Rex would soon become known as a recognised breed on an international scale.
Many people mistake the Devon Rex to be a hypoallergenic cat but this is not the case. Despite possessing a different coat, the shedding and dead skin still causes allergies. For cat owners who are allergic to cats this is a serious consideration and other cats may or may not trigger reactions. This is something that no breeder can guarantee. In most cases, the solution is to simply not pursue a cat keeping environment but many persist with great success. Its important to understand this before looking for cats and certain types will lessen the allergic triggers.
