Common Nose & Ear Problems
A healthy cat will not show any abnormal symptoms on visual observation and will mostly maintain a consistent attitude in terms behavioural mannerisms when kept in a stable environment. When maintaining a stable routine with a cat, including feeding, grooming and all other daily tasks, it will become fairly easy to notice any abnormalities that could arise. The general idea is that by maintaining persistent interaction of a cat, an owner will be able to catch on to any abnormalities that may pop up from time to time. It’s important to research and be aware of the many ailments that an effect the different parts of a cat.
The ears and nose of a cat can be easily inspected through daily grooming routines. It’s worth checking the ear area of a cat using a light if needed to make sure that no abnormal abscess or irritations are occurring. Cats have a number of problems that can arise around the ear area but one of the most alarming items to be seen will come in the form of a red or bloody blister. This is called a haematoma and will appear tender in appearance. The blood red area will emerge as a result of over scratching, rubbing or other contact that has most likely occurred due to an underlying irritation being experienced by the cat. This is not something that can be dealt with over the counter or through home remedy methods. The cat should be taken to see a vet immediately and advice over the phone beforehand is desirable. Any treatment deemed subpar will result in the deformation of the ear and cause a disfigured cauliflower ear.
A cat’s nose is also easy to inspect, when an issue arises there will be visible discharge that causes immediate effects such as sneezing or even audible sounds when the cat is trying to breathe. Discharges in the nose area are often due to viral infections that have manifested in a cat and should be assessed by a qualified vet. The vet will be able to diagnose the exact issue and prescribe the correct course of treatment. Certain breeds will suffer more from nasal infections and should be brought for a check-up immediately if suspected nose damage has occurred. There may be certain cases where a cat has suffered from general nose problems and an owner will have to assist with maintenance in this area. A vet will be able to properly diagnose and advise of necessary care requirements for the cat.
