It’s not uncommon to see a cat groom itself and occasionally scratch itself. However, there may be an instance where a cat begins to scratch profusely without rest over time and this is an indication that something is amiss. Fleas that lodge into the cat coat, will congregate around the neck of a cat. They are irritable organisms that will cause significant itching around a cat’s body. Simply running ones finger through a cats coat will allow inspection of what is going on deeper within its coat, near to the skin layer. An obvious sign of flea infestation is the remnants of a brown substance that can be described as gritty or grainy. To confirm the presence of a flea infestation, a sample of the brown substance can be taken and put onto a damp tissue. If the brown particles begin to show streaks of red, this is actually dry blood that has been excreted by the fleas. Confirmation of a flea infestation should be treated immediately.

Fortunately most owners will choose to prepare for this situation in advance. Some cats may not suffer too much in early stages but those with allergies to the flea bites will suffer from scabs and sores throughout the infestation period. The best course of remedy is to eliminate all fleas without fail so the cat may return to its peaceful state and focus on healing and grooming. Fleas are troublesome to manually catch. They are rapid and light weight as well as being miniscule in size. What’s worse is a cat can be suspect to multiple types of fleas from other animals and even humans! With this in mind, it is worth having a check for any flea attacks during the regular grooming process.

If left untreated, there is a risk of mass reproduction which will further elevate and complicate the situation. The best way to rid these nuisance pests is to use an anti-parasite treatment kit that will help rid the cat of its infestation. Vets can also prescribe treatments for cats with severe problems. Preparation against fleas is also possible by applying insecticide on a patch of its body. It is definitely worth investing in to protect a cat and the rest of the household from an infestation.
