Blue Cats

The Russian blue and the many related blue cats have a long lineage that manifests over a few centuries. During this time a number of traits were mixed and perhaps even lost. In particular, the rarity of finding a blue cat with orange eyes has soared considerably and it may even be considered somewhat an anomaly. As time went on, further genome were added to the already diverse pool and the common British Shorthairs, Korats and others were cross bred. This was an action taken out of necessity due to the plummeting population of the breed post world war. Many cats suffered at this period and faced ultimate extinction due to aftermath. The strategic breeding helped to preserve these genes and successfully saved the Blue from vanishing from the face of the planet.

Perhaps one of the most interesting melange of genes would be the pairing between the Blue and Blue Point Siamese, an exotic mix that created Siamese markings within certain litters. Breeders were fascinated by these developments but quickly dismissed as impure and unacceptable in terms of breeding. The population of the Blue slowly began to stabilise and many more Blues were brought over from Scandinavia to bolster this effort. It was around this time that the Blue made its debut around the United States. Interestingly, the tone of the Blue cats in the US is a notch lighter than that of the European standard and this can be put down to the point of origin. The standard of breeding Blues has risen and remained high over the years. The general rule of thumb is that an exemplary specimen will bear no markings or touches of white on its coat. The perfect blue coat will maintain a silky appearance and should be visible under the light as such.

Blues are great companions to have in the house and are regarded as medium sized cats. They possess an elegant and soft personality that requires appropriate respect and treatment in the household. As time goes on, the Blue will come to build a bond of care and attachment to its family. Their coats are especially soft and will benefit from regular sessions of gentle brushing. Great care should be taken so as to not damage the consistency of the coat. Nowadays the Blue will feature oval like eyes that are green rather than the unique orange observed years ago.
