RX7 FD3S Roadworthy Update

Update to my earlier post RE: Roadworthy testing

https://steemit.com/cars/@nelkeljdm/this-is-it-legal-rx7-fd-time

I had a comedy of errors this morning when taking the car through to the final roadworthy test. I forgot my wallet in my daily driver so had to turn around and fetch it, blasted back to the testing center and was then told their prices had now gone up as of February 2018 and I was short R50 around $4.5 USD.

I got back into my FD and found a nearby ATM at which I drew the balance. Arrived at the test station and they immediately started giving me a headache about this being an import and what papers I need to have, I politely reminded them that they saw to my vehicle 2 months prior and there are no issues.

Eventually they ran the test and it passed however I had a grumpy looking test agent come up to me and state there is a massive problem and that I have to come back later.

I spoke to their manager and it turned out their national eNatis system was down countrywide, they were unable to upload my passed roadworthy test to the system. I begged and pleaded to have them right down all the results and upload at a later stage without me having to physically bring the car through. They promised to email me the certificate once the system is online again and with that certificate I am then able to licence the car and collect my new number plates.

I've just arrived back at the office and had the pleasure of finding the test as promised emailed to me! Great, now I can licence the car! Problem is, I have a busy schedule today and will have to tackle this tomorrow.

Either way my RX7 FD3S now has a licence number and is finally recognised as a South African vehicle!

Hey nice Rx7! I love the FD, Rotary's are something to treasure and hold on to. It's kind of weird because my last post was about a modified Rx7 that I photographed. I will be following you for sure =D

That is kind of weird haha! Just followed and upvoted your FD post :)

And the saga continues.... so by license you mean pay road tax or something right? How much is that?
Almost forgot I upvoted you.... please send flags!

It's based on engine size and weight I think R570 for black FD, this will be same I guess. Juke is R570 too and GTR is R750ish I don't remember exact amount, MR2 was R570

Is that for a year? If so that’s so cheap!

I just realised I forgot to convert the amount to KR for you haha.. yeah that's for the whole year + R130 (90kr) once off for first registration which is what I'm going to do this morning for the RX7

Ok my tax for the RX7 is really low at 1600kr! Normal car is about 2500kr, diesels are double that.

Would you prefer a flag rather?

Being in South Africa also, I know the troubles with imported cars. Congratulations on getting it licensed!!!

Thanks buddy, picked up plates and licence disk today actually! This wasn't my first rodeo though, I have another RX7 and a GTR that were imported from Japan :)

Wow... car fanatic lol, and they arent little cars either!!. Are there downsides to using imported cars locally though? I remember a friend had to register just outside of SA for a few years before licensing here. He had to renew license outside every year also.

If you had to get it from a neighbouring country then it's a bit of a headache, not saying my process isn't but you basically have to register yourself as a collector then follow around 25 steps which take anywhere from 6 months to a year to licence the car. It's relatively cheap to do but you have to go through hoops of fire and the cars need to be internationally recognized as collectors items. For example you and I might think the Nissan S15 Silvia is a collectors but unfortunately it isn't :(

Darn! I see. This seems tougher than I thought! Alright, last one, what are the benefits to imports? The RX7 is available locally so why import? Are the vehicles made differently or are there specs that aren't available here?

The RX7 was never locally available, every single one here in SA was imported either cross border or as a collector's item and never through Mazda. I think you may be confused with the RX8

Google confirmed. RX8 was in my morning mind. You've just left me with some researching for the day...
