1985 Ferrari 288 GTO
In January in Arizona, this stunning 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO will heading to auction through RM Sotheby's. A rare opportunity to acquire a "racing" car over 30 years old with only 2,900 miles.
History of the Ferrari 288 GTO
The Ferrari 288 GTO was the first Ferrari with GTO name (GT for Gran Turismo and O for Omologata, homologated in Italian) since the 250 GTO (one of my post about an auction this model).
I don't resist putting some pictures of this post, 250 GTO beautiful race car :
The Ferrari 288 GTO was built to homologate it for competition in the famous FIA's Group B for the most powerful and fastest rally cars (Audi, Peugeot, and Lancia...). In 1987, the Group B was cancelled, the GTO never raced but Ferrari decided to sell it to its customers (for competition in Group B, you need a production of 200 cars).
The first version was based on the 308 GTB design by Pininfarina in order to build it quickly but somes majors upgrades appeared at the end with a more aggressive look :
- a longer wheelbase ,
- the doors, trunk and engine-lid in lightweight aluminum,
- bigger wheels (8 inch wide at the front and 10 at the rear),
- larger spoilers,
- and three cooling slots in the rear wings (like the 250 GTO).
Specification
Produced in 1985, this 288 GTO has a Tipo F114B mid-mounted V-8 engine producing 400 hp. The test resultats done by Road & Track (source : Wiki):
- 0–100 kmh in 5 seconds,
- 0-200 kmh in 16 seconds,
- with a top speed of 288kmh.
Inside, this model has red seat inserts, air conditionning and power windows.
