1974 BMW 2002 Turbo
Every time I see a car with this stripe or the Martini's livery, I can't help it, I have to a post about it :-). During the Amelia Island auction block by Gooding and Company, this stunning 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo will be offer for an estimate price of $US 150,000. Who wants the keys of this iconic high performance model ?
History of BMW 2002
It all started with the BMW 1600 in 1966 for the BMW’s 50th birthday, defined by the advertising as :
"modern, compact, dynamic, sporty, offering a wide range of features, and striking for its consistency of style and technology." (source : BMW Blog).
But people wanted a sports car with better performance, the 1600 produces 85 hp and can reach the 100 kmh in 13.3 seconds. Huge success...
The BMW 2002 was presented in 1968 after Helmut Werner Bönsc, BMW's director and Alex von Falkenhausen, BMW's engineer modified their BMW 1600 with a two litre engine. In US, Max Hoffman, famous importer of European cars (behind Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Alfa Romeo Giuletta Spider, Porsche 356 Speedster...), wanted a sporting version of the BMW 02 series.
Then, the BMW 2002 Turbo was introduced in 1973 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was the first European production car to have a turbocharger (GM offered in some cars in the 60's). But with the 1973 oil crisis, only 1,672 examples were produced.
Specification
The BMW 2002 Turbo has 1,990 CC SOHC Inline 4 cylinder engine single KKK turbocharger producing 170 hp at 5,800 rpm.
The design of the 2002 Turbo is easily recognizable with its deep front air dam, rear spoiler... And with this stripes, this example is just beautiful with its black leather interior with a flashy red dashboard, completely restored between 2011 and 2014.

Really sweet little pocket rocket. It's really rare to see one, and at $150,000 it's decently priced for an old classic like this. Looks like it's in pretty great shape, too! I suppose in today's world, the M2 would be the modern equivalent of a 2002, though I still wish BMW would've made their 2002 Homage a production car, even in limited edition guise if need be.

Oh yeah a tribute to this iconic car will be great. Thanks for the article, I forgot this concept car for the 100th BMW'S anniversary and 50th of the 2002.
