1967 BMW-Glas 3000 V8 Fastback Coupé Prototype
This stunning 1967 BMW-Glas 3000 V8 Fastback Coupé Prototype is heading to the auction block through Bonhams in Paris, next month for about € 300,000. With a coachwork by Carrozzeria Frua, this prototype is a must to have for every BMW collector, so unique !
History of BMW-Glas 3000 V8
Glas is a former German automotive company founded by Hans Glass in order to produce farm machinery. The company based in Dingolfing (not far from Munich Google Map) evolved with the launch of scooters (the son was a Vespa's fan) then automobiles, especially the small car Goggomobil produced between 1955 and 1969.
Goggomobil (Wikipedia)
In 1963, Glas decided to launch a GT coupé designed by Pietro Frua, the Italian design behind famous Maserati's coachworks (Mistral...). But the company was in financial difficulties and was bought by BMW in 1966.
The Glas 2600 V8 was presented during the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show in two versions :
- 1 300 cm3 producing 85 hp,
- 1 700 cm3 100 hp.
Maserati Mistral (Wikipedia), same father :-)
The model was nicknamed Glaserati for its resemblance to Maserati's cars. Pietro Frua designed a coachwork for the V8 but BMW prefered its own 3.0 CS as a touring coupé, so only one example was produced. In 1969, the prototype was presented in Barcelona finished in red, sold in Andalucia and stayed there for more than 20 years.
Specification
The BMW-Glas 3000 V8 has a 2982 cc V8 engine with a top speed of 200 kmh.
The car was completely restored in 2016. The interior was refurbished and the exterior color changed to Silver-Blue metallic, the same color as at the 1967 Paris Motor Show. I like the design, sleek and aggressive... Very nice model that I didn't know. Did you know this model?

Your sharing this has made my day, and it's certainly piqued my interest, since I never knew this model was made before, and I would've never guessed that it would be a BMW!
I see that Mr. Glas has a Lamborghini-like origin, having moved onto making sports cars from farm machinery, though I wished that Glas could have the success which underpinned Lamborghini. This Coupe certainly does look something more Italian than German, and it really doesn't have a BMW-like design language to it.
Granted, I think some of the proportions on the Fastback are a bit off, such as how those tyres and wheels appear a tad too small for the car's proportions. Though overall, it's a pretty car, and far away from the boxy Beemers of the era, and it appears as exotic as it sounds.
It's unfortunate that BMW never made more than one, because I would've liked to see more on the road, albeit one would probably mistaken it for a Maserati at first sight!
Yep, I didn't know this model either and even the automobile brand Glas was unfamiliar to me. Always fun to learn something about 60's / 70's cars. Thanks for your support.
