1973 Iso Grifo GL Series II
This stunning 1973 Iso Grifo GL Series II set to be a London star next month when it hits the auction block through RM Sotheby's. I don't know much about Iso Grifo so it's perfect to learn more about this Italian automaker thanks to this limited-production sports car. And you'll find some auto news at the end of the post...
History of the Iso Grifo GL
The Iso Grifo was founded by Renzo Rivolta who wanted after WWII to improve Italian transportation with scooters and the famous Isetta (the bubble car). With a deal with BMW in 1962 , Rivolta could produce a GT car presented during the Turin Motor Show.
Thanks to Italian designers Nuccio Bertone and Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Iso Grifo, the sport two-seat version, was built from 1965 to 1974 with lightweight Corvette engine. For the Iso Grifo GL (Gran Lusso), Rivolta and Bertone wanted to compete against Ferrari and Maserati. In 1970, the engine was changed for the Series II for better performance. But with the 1973 oil crisis, the company declared bankruptcy. :-(
Specification
The Iso Grifo GL series II has a Ford 351 Cleveland V-8 engine mated with five-speed manual transmission producing 350 hp. Only 37 were built in this configuration.
This model was finished in white over rust coloured interior. Nice model with a quite original bodywork...

Another beautiful car, @heroldius!
The ISO Grifo is one of my favourite cars, simply because of its bad-ass styling and stance.
Flamboyant Italian styling, combined with brute American horsepower.
Some of the earlier ISO Grifos were available with a big block Chevy V8, up to 7.5 litres!
Unfortunately ISO is no longer around nowadays, though I do hope they can be revived sometime soon.
The oil crisis, combined with taxes in Italy for high displacement cars, meant that big engine cars like the Grifo couldn't survive long :(
Thanks it's appreciated. It's great to see your comment, interesting.
A lot of brand are relaunched, it would be cool to see a new Grifo on the road.
Would definitely like to see some of the older Italian brands resurrected.
The one brand that I would definitely crave to be reborn (properly)... is Lancia.
Lancia's greatness died too suddenly. I can't believe they're making boring, rebranded economy cars for Fiat now... :'(
Indeed, the old Lancia's models of the 50's or 60's were stunning like Flaminia or Aurelia :
Agreed! The 50s and 60s were the pinnacle of car design.
The Flaminia Zagato Super Sport is one of my favourites from the era.
Personally, I'd like to see more of the race/rally- bred Lancias return, like the Stratos, 037, and Delta Integrale Evo.
That's a great looking car, beautiful mate cheers.
Original design...
