1967 BMW 1600 GT convertible
Today, I don't present an auction but a gorgeous restoration of an unique model, the last remanining 1967 BMW 1600 GT convertible designed by Pietro Frua, Italian coachbuilder in the 50's and 60's.
History of the BMW 1600 GT convertible
During 7 years, the BMW apprentices in bodywork and vehicle construction mechanics from the BMW Plant Dingolfing in Bavaria have restored this BMW 1600 GT convertible to its original condition painted in silver with a red hood.
So beautiful...
Only two models were built in 1967, and the first one has an accident during its test drive. The other was owned by Herbet Quandt, major shareholder at BWM at the time. Now, the remaining model is in the BMW Group Classic vehicle collection.
Just for the story, the 1600 GT comes from the purchase of the manufacturer Glas by BMW in 1966. Glas was initially a German manufacturer specializing in agricultural machinery. At the end of the WWII, Glas re-orientates its production towards the machines for the general public. In 1963, Glas launched the 1300 and 1700 GT models from which the BMW 1600 GT Coupe came from (same coachwork, different motor).

Early sports coupes are very beautiful. I like the top shot the best. I like these designs before they became too masculine and all about power.
It was the Golden age for Italian coachbuilders in the 50 and 60's with Pininfarina, Zagato, Frua, Bertone... beautiful design
