How can you really help your prospects without knowing what problems or issues they're having?

Obviously, you must know who your target market is first. I assume you've done that, but if not, here are five questions to ask when identifying your target market:

1. Who are they?

2. What do they do?

3. Where do they hang out online?

4. What do they want?

5. What's stopping them from getting what they want?

If you want to create passive income on the internet and go into business for yourself, there are three crucial internet marketing steps to follow, and I mentioned these in a previous post:

Part 2: Research
There are quite a few different ways to discover the issues your target market needs help with. One of the easiest methods is to use social media. There are thousands and thousands of Facebook groups. Find one that interests your target market and get involved by answering people's questions and submitting questions of your own. Ask people what common issues they're having!

I've joined several groups that aim to help ordained wedding ministers and really enjoy interacting with the groups' participants. I've been officiating weddings at firstofficiant.com since 2008 and have lots of experience to share. I do my best to only answer questions and not to solicit anyone in the Facebook group, but my ultimate goal is to send them to mattsweddingceremonies.com, which is the info product I came up with while going through the SFM's training modules. If you're hoping to help people go into business for themselves, join Facebook groups that appeal to those folks.

However, many of those groups are filled with spammers, so you must find one that has active participants who care about the group. Never start out by selling! Genuinely try to help by sharing what you know and by asking questions.

Quora.com is another great place to research the needs of your target market. Quora is a community where people post questions and anyone can answer. I've asked Quora to notify me whenever people post questions about weddings and internet marketing. Just like Facebook or other social media groups, the idea is to genuinely answer questions and build trust, not to directly sell.

Affiliate marketing forums are another great place to check out. Look for the most active threads to find the most common issues people are having. Eight popular forums are:

1. Warrior Forum

2. SitePoint

3. DigitalPoint

4. The V7 Network

5. Affilorama

6. WickedFire

7. AffiliateFix

8. WebProWorld

Browsing forums and social media will give you a great idea what issues people need help with, but you must do proper keyword research so you know what people are typing into the search engines while looking for an answer.

You can create great marketing content all day long, but if the keyword phrases people are searching for aren't contained within your content, it won't be found!

There are many other ways to conduct research for marketing content, but social media, Quora, and other forums are the primary three I utilize. It requires no financial investment on my part, only time.

Another strategy is to see what your competitors are doing. Give them your email address and opt-into their marketing efforts. Never plagiarize, but feel free to re-purpose the content by putting it into your own words and using your own experience to back it up. These other online marketers will show you what works and what issues people are having that they help with.
