"WHAT THE HECK, I JUST HAD THE WORST INTERVIEW" ...HOW TO RECOVER FROM A BAD INTERVIEW

in #career5 years ago

Well that interview just didn't seem to go as you expected. The interviewer didn't seem to like you, you didn't answer questions properly or know how to answer a question, you were late, you got the interviewers name wrong, you made an inappropriate comment....the list goes on.

To get back on track is simpler than you think.

First, take a moment to breathe. You are frustrated and stressed about the interview. It's going to take a few minutes - an hour even - to let go of the emotions. Remember to reflect on the experience, and not to beat yourself up.

Second, learn from the mistakes you made. Preparation is usually the best way to correct most interview mistakes. Take an hour to review before any interview. It gives you a foundation of information to pull from when conversing in the interview. If the mistake was personality, skills or lack of interest than the best way to recover is the thank you letter.

Third, correct the mistake. The Thank You Letter (TYL) is one of the best ways to correct any errors in the interview...in some cases it's a second chance. The TYL is an acknowledgement of what occurred in the interview, gives an explanation for the interview flub, reiterates why you are the right hire for the role and asks for the opportunity to meet again.

If you really feel strongly this was the job for you, ask for a second interview. Write a compelling letter stating your case. The letter should start with an apology if one is needed, acknowledge the circumstances of the interview, offer an explanation, a reason why you should be given a second interview based on skills, experience and knowledge, and proof* you are an ideal fit and why it's not a waste of time for the organization to interview you again.

*Important note about proof. Proof works when it uses information taken from the interview.

  1. Giving an example of how you would solve a problem that the interviewer outlined in the interview
  2. Based on the interview you highlight experiences, references, knowledge, skills that make you the right fit
  3. Make promises you can keep
