This morning as usual I logged into the South China Morning Post and on the front page I was greeted with this story

“Green gold: how China quietly grew into a cannabis superpower”

I thought “WHAT”! That cannot be and quickly read the story. If the story is to be believed, China has already legalized the growing of cannabis as a cash crop. The cannabis plant allows the growers to sell off every part of the for a nice tidy profit.

The growers sell the stems of the crop to textile factories to make high-quality fabric, the leaves to pharmaceutical companies for drugs, and the seeds to food companies to make snacks, kitchen oil and drinks.

The 1970s saw heavy research into its properties by the Chinese government as part of its war effort in Vietnam and its’ researches are now paying off.

As a result of that research, more than half of the world’s 600-plus patents related to the plant are now held in China, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation. This has prompted concerns in the Western pharmaceutical industry that the Chinese government or Chinese firms might take advantage of the patent barriers.

China has a long history with regards to the growing of cannabis.

Cannabis sativa has been cultivated in China for centuries, mainly for the plant’s strong fibres which can be turned into rope, fabric and paper. Hemp fabric dating back more than 3,400 years has been found in Shang dynasty tombs in Hebei and the fibre is believed to have been the basis of the earliest forms of paper made in the country.

China keeps a close eye on the industry while wanting to nurture the growth of the industry in a careful and controlled manner. It also seeks to ensure that illegal use does not get out of hand that may lead to social problems. In China cannabis is classed as an illicit drug but the authorities tend to turn a blind eye on cannabis growers but this tend to vary from region to region.

Anybody with more than 5kg of processed marijuana leaves, 10kg of resin, or 150kg of fresh leaves can face the death penalty, under Chinese criminal law.

Nevertheless, industries have sprung up around cannabis like the Hemp Investment Group, a Beijing based company which advocates the commercial pharmaceutical use of the plant. The company has even partnered with the People’s Liberation Army to take the Chinese technology and product to the world.

What’s more, it is not just China who are doing research in this field but the Russians are at it too.

Here are a couple of quotes lifted from the HMI Group website which makes for a very interesting read and gives insight into the direction in which cannabis is headed in China in the future.

Yunnan Hansu Bio-technology Co. Ltd., subsidiary company of HMI Group, has built in Kunming the first industrial hemp plant extraction factory in China conforming to the standard of GMP. The plant applies modern extraction technology to isolate cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive ingredient in hemp, which has a positive and profound influence to health care industry. Hansu has the world's largest monomer CBD extraction plant, as well as the only one to extract the essence of hemp. The establishment of this extraction and separation base provides possibilities of research in treating a variety of refractory diseases such as epilepsy, depression, Parkinson's, etc.

Hanyi Bio-technology Co., Ltd., invested by HMI Group, has established Life Sciences Institute and Academician Workstation cooperated with Mr. Yang Baofeng, the president of Harbin Medical University, providing a solid foundation for the industrial hemp research in bio-pharmaceutical and life science area. With the advanced enterprise management concept and strong ability of independent innovation, Hanyi Bio-technology Co., Ltd., is developing the antiepileptic drug "hemp polyphenols tablets" which is supported by Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. Meanwhile, an antidepressant development has achieved initial results.

The HMI Group already have three products available: cannabidiol (CBD) and two hemp drink.

This news comes as a huge surprise. They are smart to do what they are doing though. The western world classified marijuana as illegal but largely ignored the alternative uses for hemp. I had no idea about China's long history with hemp either.

Thanks @eitsky, I try to give my take on thing as i see it to give an alternative perspective. China's attitude is to try out full scale testing to see if anything is viable or not. If not then shut it down, what is the point of small scale test when you have to spend the money anyway.

China has a very long history and I am amazed myself as to what has come out of China over time historically. China has lost a lot of know how and only just beginning to rediscover their lost arts and inventions.

Fascinating stuff, I wonder how they will figure out how to not allow people to breed plants for higher THC content.

If THC can be extracted and put to good use then government will regulate it and let people make money from it. If used for illegitimate purposes as defined by government then expect to be closed down.
