Cannabis Arrests Rising Faster In New Jersey Than Any Other Area

in #cannabis6 years ago (edited)

Despite the increasing legalization of cannabis in the United States, arrests over cannabis have been increasing. Since 2014, cannabis-related arrests have increased in more than half of the country. There are also still thousands of people who are sitting behind bars, paying for a punishment that was linked to a "crime" that now isn't considered a crime any longer because of the changes in legalization. Those individuals never should have been placed behind bars to begin with, but especially not now, they should be let out.

One study found that arrests relating to cannabis outnumbered those relating to violent crimes.

Too many cages are still being filled up, reputations and lives being destroyed, over personal consumption habits.

But activists and various lawmakers have been pushing for change, you can now find dozens of states that have embraced either recreational or medicinal cannabis use, despite the remaining federal restrictions. Their written promises don't hold much weight when many people are still being unjustly harassed over their personal consumption habits.

Will NJ Be Next To Legalize Recreational Cannabis?

Lawmakers in the state were recently expected to vote on a bill that would make the change to move forward with legalization but a vote on that bill in the Senate has now been delayed, it didn't yet have enough votes to pass. New Jersey lawmakers have been working to try and have this new bill passed and if they are eventually successful then it will become the 2nd state to make such changes through state legislature and not through a ballot initiative.

New Jersey might soon become the 11th state to legalize cannabis for recreational use.

It's reported that Gov. Phil Murphy is in support of the legislative changes and has allegedly been calling lawmakers to seek their support on making it happen. If it is passed it would make changes so that anyone who is 21 years of age or over could possess up to an ounce, along with permitting the sale of cannabis in the state, and more.

Seeing as cannabis arrests are rising faster in NJ than anywhere else, they are one region that could greatly benefit from making changes in reversing their prohibitionist stance and ending their war on drugs. Although, the changes that they are seeking to make wouldn't achieve that entirely, there would still be various restrictive dictates in place surrounding the sale and growing of cannabis etc. There is always some fine print to the newly afforded freedoms that lawmakers choose to embrace for the people.

Despite Murphy's efforts to lobby support for passage of the bill, the vote has currently been postponed. Though, Senate president S. Sweeney has admitted that the fight for change isn't over yet. The governor has also insisted that he is committed to continuing the conversations surrounding the legalization of recreational cannabis and that the effort for legalization hasn't entirely been defeated.

"Despite the increasing legalization of cannabis in the United States, arrests over cannabis have been increasing". It's the same story over here in Canada unfortunately. Maybe not so many arrests at first (they're being careful about that for public perception) but lots of raids pf previously legit dispensaries and compassion clubs/pain societies.

In the meantime they're making almost everything about cannabis illegal (including things that used to be legal or quasilegal before legLIEzation). They're setting the stage to take full control and recriminalize it, the people and the culture, and it's gonna spread worldwide.

In many states with legal weed, the only place to legally consume marijuana is at a private residence. But New Jersey would be different if the bill passes as-is.

This is just plain madness... they are leaving people in jail for something that is legal already. It makes no sense, it's wrong, they are literally stealing people's life away.

In my country we can carry 10g of weed with us without any problems, and I've known people that were caught smoking it in public places and the cop only told them to go somewhere else because that place was to public, which makes sense, no one should be forced to inhale weed or tobacco smoke if they don't want to...

We should decriminalize and or legalize everything, the world is supposed to be a free place...

But no one wants to talk to the victims...

The drug War is still raging!
