B&W Photocontest: Plants - Hearts

in #bwphotocontest7 years ago

Hello again, Steemit friends! This is my 2nd entry for this week's B&W photo contest hosted by @daveks. This contest is made possible with the continuing support of @papa-pepper, who also serves as the judge for this week.

This photo was taken when I did my trekking at Mt. Tabayoc, in Kabayan, Benguet. Mt. Tabayoc is hard to trek because its montane mossy forest receives rainfall virtually all throughout the year. As a result, its trails are moist most of the time and slippery. You'll find many plant life that is unique in tropical regions; many flora and fauna species within Mt. Tabayoc's montane forest are endemic in the Southeast Asian region, if not within the Philippines. As a testament to that, here is a plant with heart-shaped leaves, I spotted this plant when me and my companions barely started our trek. I am not sure about its identification, but I suspect it belongs to the Aroid plant family, or another family related to it. Just like my previous entry, this photo was taken using my Nikon D3100.

This is a plant that has a lot of love, because it has a heart shape. I have some at home that also has a heart shape. They are tubers. It is called Ocumo, it is like bread, when cooking the root..

Ocumo is a close relative of Taro, which is more common here in Asia. It's also edible. Based from wikipedia, they both belong to the family Araceae.

I think this plant belongs to Araceae too, but the venation and leaf sheath structure is different than both Ocumo and Taro. So it's likely a close relative of both. Heart plants! 💖
