I am looking forward to seeing your butterflies and other insects!

Here are my photos for today of the Banded Woolly Bear Caterpillar.

This black and orange, or reddish-brown caterpillar known as the Banded Woolly Bear Caterpillar, will become the Isabella Tiger Moth. All of the fuzzy looking caterpillars are called Woolly Bears but the hairs on them are not soft. They have a bristly texture which can cause skin irritation for some people that touch them. They don't have venom and they can't sting, but the bristles can make your skin feel like you have been stung.

The woolly bear caterpillars are mostly seen at the end of summer and autumn as they frantically eat as much as they can, and look for a safe place to make their cocoon.

Some people believe that the more black you see on these banded woolly bears, means that there will be a heavy snowfall in the coming winter. It is just a myth.

Yay! You know how happy I am to get a photo of my subjects face! Sorry you can't see it very well.

Staying with the Halloween theme, here is a photo of an orb weaver spider who has just captured a slender meadow katydid. It was all I could do to get this photo. Poor katydid.

All photos are my own.

Thanks so much for your kind words! Have you seen the yellow ones? I like all colors and I can't believe how fast they are. : )

@whatisnew
I do see yellow catatpilars but the look a little different from the wooly. bear. And YES they are fast...😊.

He looks so soft and cuddly but he's bristly...just another of life's disappointments;)

I never thought of it that way. It is disappointing, isn't it?!?!
