Kerrygold Success Prompts Farmers To Ask For More Money
Kerrygold has recently become the most successful food export for Ireland, passing 1 billion in annual sales.
According to the farmers who produce the milk that's used to make that butter, they say the success has been due to the farmers who have poured a great deal of investment into their farms, to be able to produce the highest quality milk that would go into those products.
For this reason, now that Kerrygold has become so successful, they want to see better pay.
"...this whole sector is built on our work, our skill and our milk. The price we receive needs to reflect that and dairy farmers will judge their processor and marketing bodies on this basis." - P. McCormack
Irish butter exports have recently reached record levels and there aren't any signs that it will slow down anytime soon. Butter exports to North America alone have reportedly grown by over 90 percent.
Ireland has been regarded as the most carbon efficient milk producer in the EU, being able to produce roughly 5 million tonnes every year. They've been seeing double digit growth in the United States and in Germany it's been estimated that more than 50 percent of households there bought a Kerrygold product in 2017.
As more grass-fed butter options have come onto the market it's expected that the rapid Kerrygold growth might stall, as people increasingly opt for butter alternatives. For now though, they're still the favorite of many.
