The Grass Is Always Greener

The Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Girls with curly hair long for straight shiny locks.

Girls with straight hair wish they had some curls.

Most Crypto Projects wish they had a way to appeal to and attract mainstream users.

And we seem to be wishing we were somthing else.

One way to bring an economy to Steem is to attract users and teach them how to use crypto.

We are doing that! Even after a year of little user facing growth and a market that dropped by 80 to 90%.. we have active engaged users.

If you doubt it, take a look at my recent posts asking for end-user experiences from users who learned about Crypto on Steem.

https://steemit.com/busy/@whatsup/still-looking-for-users-that-were-not-in-crypto-prior-to-steem

These two posts received a combined total of 135 comments so far and about 75 stories. That's "At a Glance" math. I will be trying to find time to read them all tomorrow as I've had a busy week, but per usual the responses are overwhelming and really high quality.

Story after story about people who came across Steem and learned to earn, sell, hold and trade Steem and for many including myself the gateway into the world of crypto-currency, bitcoin and exchanges.

Stories from users like @canadian-coconut, @tarazkp, @zekepickleman. These users and around 75 others took the time to tell their stories some in great detail and others in a quick note. How they stumbled across Steem (usually steemit.com) and learned to love our platform, learned to trade, bought some Bitcoin, etc.

Yet some of our whales are mad/sad - smad, because they think this creates sell pressure.

Doesn't POW mining create sell pressure? Do whales in other projects complain that others are mining and possibly selling in order to cover expenses? I doubt it.

Anyway, I really hope some of you will take a look at these stories and consider what would happen if we were marketing and had a solid story about Steem.

(Also, I would love to compile some data on these responses, like how much combined steem power is held by these users, etc. anyone want to help extract some information from this mass of responses?

Anyway, just a quick note to say, sometimes we don't give the State of Steem enough credit.

There are some thoughts about all of this... which I should probably turn into a post.

Reality: Nobody's going to do anything for us here, to develop this community. WE are the they who will build this.

Potential idea: Let's forget "investors" for a moment; let's forget selling this as "crypto," and let's instead try to reach the 30+ million users who pretty much were abandoned when Facebook started conquering the world.

The potential target audience here isn't a blockchainiac, it's a Medium user who struggles to be seen because they aren't part of the right clique; it's the 1000's of people who sit in Xanga and LiveJournal "memorial legacy" groups on Facebook, crying about how sad it is that social blogging disappeared; it's artists and creatives who are looking for something less rigid than Patreon... and so forth, and so on.

I have said a dozen times — and I will keep saying it — without dedicated end users it doesn't matter how brilliant your damn app is! You build the world's greatest shopping mall, with the finest shops... but it doesn't amount to a hill of beans unless you're attracting actual customers, because all those fancy "stores" will just go bankrupt, and then you're screwed.

The community we have built here is brilliant... and way beyond the responses you have collected, this place is filled with people who are "creators first" and into cryptos second.

the grass is always greener where you water it.

Love it. 👍

If you have a list of the names perhaps @abh12345 might want to do a post on the numbers.

I am planning on compiling the names tomorrow. I just got over-whelmed while reading a few stories tonight on what waste we are making of these user stories.

Thanks for the suggestion!

hoping to get some time to add to your list @whatsup as I'm one of those who would not be interested in crypto with finding Steem

That's a great idea! Asher is pretty brilliant at data mining and presenting a lot of information in an easily understood format.

I never understand the 'hodler' high moral position they take when viewing the 'selling of steem'.( as though it was leprosy or something...)

You need a market (supply/ demand ) to make a market.
There is no market if people never sold.

Maybe it's the unconscious expressing itself .

Expressing the fear that they really have inside, and the fear of steem having much less value than their 'confident consciousness' - and their mouths love to talk about...

I see no other logical reason for the moral derision of 'steem sellers'.

If you wanted volatility because you were confident of the value increasing- ...then you would embrace 'sellers' just as much as 'buyers..'

What other reason would there be...could there be , for a negative moral outlook on people that chose to sell their own assets....?

Yeah it does seem like fear. And bad math skills. It is the large accounts that can impact the price not the bloggers. Simple math would make that clear. ;)

.....and here I was, thinking i was adding value to steem...

"I'm leaving!!!!!!...and I want my ball back..."

Leveraging your network via the blockchain to gather data and turn it into information. Awesome initiative and I am glad to help out.

This should produce some insightful perspective!

That is a great amount of feedback to analyze! I read through a couple and found the same underlying themes about interest in crypto. I have always said that Steem is at an interesting crossroad between two sectors in demand, blockchain and social media! Look forward to more details!

Great work you are doing @whatsup! I like where this is headed <3

Steemit is like the hot chick!

I wondered why you were seeking the information you requested. Now I know. I'm glad I took a little time to comment. Would be interesting to see some stats based on the 75 responders.

I was just reading a friend's post on her Steemiversary of One year on Steemit. She goes by the handle, @zen-art and she shared her inspiring journey on how she started, some statistics and the communities she's well involved in. But recently, a few people here, like you've mentioned, thinks the grass may always seem 'greener' on the other side. A lot of us tend to cover ourselves with so much of the negativity and dramas that has been also happening recently that they failed to see the good in all this.

That's why I always revert myself back to inspiring stories by amazing and dedicated Steemians.
