River trip peeking at ICON SIAM; the biggest shopping complex in Bangkok, นั่งเรือเล่นผ่านไปดู ไอคอนสยาม

Over the weekend, I decided to take a boat trip down the River Chao Phraya to visit a few temples along the river. The afternoon sun was bearable though some dark clouds started spreading around the blue sky. The powerful movements of massive volume of water which swayed the boat were just awe inspiring and demanding my respect and gratitude.

I got on the boat at Sathorn Pier which meant that the boat would be passing Icon Siam on its way towards the Grand Palace. At the pier, there was a long queue of people waiting for the free ride to Icon Siam. There are free 'hop on hop off' boats to and from the latest and biggest shopping complex in Bangkok and Thailand. I did not think it's a good idea to visit that place two days after the grand opening. I saw big crowds queuing at the entrance and there was hardly empty space inside, from the news report. Some people were sleeping in front of the shopping complex the night before, just to make sure that they were the first group who entered the shopping mall! How crazy have Thai people become in the age of consumerism and materialism.

The boat trip took about five minutes from the pier to the ICON SIAM Pier where I could see the overwhelming glass panels of the complex with two sky scrappers which reminded me of the Twin Tower in New York. This really gave me a very uneasy feeling about this complex. My imagination started to run wild: 'what if there was a storm surge in the Gulf of Siam' , this place and those buildings along the river would be flooded and demolished. Bangkok also has the problem of sinking every year from 4-8 inches depending on the areas, and it has been estimated that Bangkok will be under water in about 15 years. Source So, I really do not understand the logic of this massive investments and the risk analysis of the mega project which must have cost over Bt54 billion (around $17,000 M). Bangkok was known as 'Venice of the East' in the past, so one day we may have to start using gondolas and more boats instead of cars, in fifteen years' time. Meanwhile I should hurry up with my sightseeing plans and enjoy myself while the land is still dry.

สุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเราตัดสินใจไปไหว้พระและทำบุญ ตามวัดที่อยู่ริมแม่นํ้าเจ้าพระยาเพราะนี่ก็ใกล้สิ้นปีเก่า และจวนจะเริ่มต้นปีใหม่ในเร็วๆนี้ เราไปขึ้นเรือที่ท่าเรือสาทร เห็นคนเข้าคิวยาวเหยียดเพื่อขึ้นเรือโดยสารฟรีไปเที่ยวไอคอนสยาม เราคงไม่ไปเที่ยวที่นี่วันนี้เพราะเขาพึ่งจะเปิดบริการได้เพียงสองวัน เราดูในข่าวเห็นคนเป็นพันคนรอคิวเข้าไปในห้าง และภายในห้างก็แทบจะไม่มีีที่ให้เดินเลย มีคนบางกลุ่มลงทุนไปนอนหน้าห้างก่อนเปิดคืนหนึ่ง เพื่อจะได้เป็นคนกลุ่มแรกๆที่ได้เข้าไปเหยียบในห้าง เราไม่เข้าใจว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นกับคนไทยในยุควัตถุนิยมและบริโภคนิยมในปัจจุบัน

เรือใช้เวลาเดินทางประมาณห้านาทีก็ไปจอดที่ท่านํ้าของไอคอนสยาม เราเห็นมีแต่กระจกบานใหญ่เต็มด้านหน้าของห้าง และมีตึกระฟ้าอีกสองแท่ง ซึ่งทำให้เราคิดถึงตึกแฝดที่นิวยอร์ค เราไม่ค่อยจะชอบพลังของสิ่งก่อสร้างที่นี่เลย มันทำให้เรารู้สึกไม่สบายใจนัก สิ่งที่น่ามึนงงก็คือการลงทุนในเมกะโปรเจ็กริมแม่นํ้าที่มีมูลค่าการลงทุนสูงถึง 54,000 ล้านบาท เพราะกรุงเทพฯนั้นมีการทรุดของแผ่นดินทุกปี ประมาณ 4 ถึง 8 นิ้วขึ้นอยู่กับพื้นที่ และมีการคาดการณ์ว่ากรุงเทพฯจะอยู่ใต้นํ้า หรือนํ้าท่วมภายในอีก 15ปี ซึ่งแสดงว่าการลงทุนมหาศาลที่นี่มีความเสี่ยงสูง ถ้าหากเกิดคลื่นยักษ์ในอ่าวไทย ก็หมายความว่าบ้านเรือนและตึกที่อยู่รายรอบแม่นํ้าจะได้รับความเสียหายอย่างไม่คาดคิดมาก่อน ในอดีตกรุงเทพฯเคยถูกเรียกว่าเป็น เวนิสตะวันออก จึงทำให้คิดได้ว่า ในอนาคตเราอาจจะต้องใช้เรือกอนโดล่า และเรือโดยสารแทนรถยนต์ เราจึงต้องรีบเที่ยวตามสถานที่ที่เราอยากไปให้เร็วที่สุด ในขณะที่แผ่นดินยังไม่โดนนํ้าท่วมทั้งหมด ฉะนั้นเวลามีค่ามากเราจึงต้องใช้ชีวิตให้มีความหมายและความรื่นเริงให้มากที่สุดในแต่ละวัน
