Völuspá - The Prophecy of the Seer

in #busy6 years ago

Skål steemers! After some days disappeared, I bring here more one poem from the Nordic Mythology, in which the Völva (Seer) had a prophecy one time.

Völva wants silence from the Heimdallr sons - the humans - and asks to Odin if he needs she declaims the old knowledge. She remember of the antique giants Jötunns which created her.

So she starts describing the Creation Myth.

World were empty until Borr sons woke up the Earth out the sea.

The Æsir then established order in the cosmos, finding places for the Sun, the Moon and the Stars, and thus, beginning the cycle of day and night.

The Golden Era, which followed the Æsir, had enough gold and they gladly built temples and made tools. But then the three mighty maidens of the giants came from Jotunheim and the golden age was over. Thus the Æsir created the dwarves, which Durinn and Motsongir are the most powerful.

After the Dvergatal, the creation of the first man and woman are recounted and Yggdrasil is described. The seer remember the events that leads to the First War, and what happened in the struggle between Æsir and Vanir.

The seer begins describing the murder of Balder, the fairest of the gods and the enemy of Loki, and of others. Then it foresees the destruction of the gods where the fire and the flood overwhelm heaven and earth when the gods fight their last battle with their enemies. This is the "final destination of the gods" - the Ragnarök. She describes the call to battle, the death of many of the gods and how Odin was murdered.

Finally, a beautiful and reborn world will rise from the ashes of death and destruction, where Balder will live again in this new world, where the earth is abundant and there isn't mercy for seeds. Then the dragon Níðhöggr appears, bringing bodies in its wings, before the seer awakens from the trance.

Listen to my words, every men
Ye, great and small children of Heimdall:
Thou summoned me Odin, to tell what I remember
From the earliest deeds of the gods and men.

Sun goes black, Earth sinks in the sea,
The bright stars fall from the sky.
Flames burn Yggdrasil leaves,
Even a great fire pit reaches the highest clouds.

Brothers shall fight and kill each other
Cousins shall destroy the peace between them
The old tree sighs when the giant swings
Yggdrasil stands, but shudders

Garm howls horribly before the doors to Hel
The wolf shall break its bonds and flee
Waterfalls flow and eagles fly high
Hunting for fish among mountain peaks

I see a room erected there, more beautiful than the sunlight
Plated with gold in Gimle
There brave men shall live
And enjoy happiness in their lives
